Evia or Euboea is an island so large and so close to the mainland that it doesn’t even seem like an island but an extension of the continent.
Practically unknown to foreign tourists but very popular with the Greek population, it is located just an hour by bus or car from Athens and can be reached by a bridge that crosses the sea or by sea also at the eastern end, a mandatory port among other things to reach the island of Skyros.
The rugged and mountainous landscape offers low and sandy beaches on the internal coast while the Aegean coast is high and jagged with coves reachable only by boat. In the majestic northern part, there are natural springs such as the Loutra Edipsou area, the most famous for its healing waters. In the southern part towards Karystos, the combination of beaches and nature will leave you breathless.
Must see Chalkida, the capital of the island, a modern town with shops and restaurants and a 15th century fortress, Kimi located high above the sea with an ancient Byzantine monastery, Rouvies where there is the oracle dedicated to the God Apollo are just a few examples of the things to see on the beautiful and mysterious island of Evia. The most beautiful beaches are Lichadonisa defined as “the Seychelles of Greece”, Vithoudi, Limmionas and Kalamaki. In short, an island to be discovered with the certainty of not feeling suffocated by mass tourism.
Here too the things to see and do are impossible to describe all, difficult to say how much time would be necessary to be able to explore it completely, here are our tips on the stages definitely not to be missed and as always if you have suggestions of hidden places we are always happy to share all the information.
