The beautiful Kalymnos in Italian Calimno or Calino, is found in the Dodecanese Islands right in front of the Turkish coast.
The fourth largest of the Archipelago is famous for its sponges. For more than 500 years its inhabitants have been the best fishermen of these aquatic animals and have made it their main activity, thus becoming increasingly appreciated and requested. A risky and hard job, think that once people dived with heavy diving suits and even before in apnea with a stone tied around the waist to stay as long as possible under water. Let’s say that in the present sponges have become mostly just souvenirs for tourists and that there are few sponge fishermen left. In memory of all this is the statue of Poseidon in the port of Pothia the capital.
An atypical island dominated by high mountains with rocky outcrops overlooking the Aegean Sea, which here is an incredible intense blue, coves and heavenly beaches where you can sunbathe, trekking routes through a harsh and harsh nature, cliffs where climbing enthusiasts can conquer almost inaccessible points and enjoy breathtaking views, and also fjords, woods and valleys covered with olive trees and citrus groves, beehives scattered here and there for the production of excellent honey and finally fishing, in Kalymnos you can eat the freshest fish of all the islands that surround it. It is not overrun by mass tourism, people come here above all for sport and to relax.
Even in winter Kalymnos is alive, the bars are open, the cafes especially on Sundays are full of inhabitants who do not give up a healthy walk and their coffee or to take advantage of even a faint ray of sunshine.
