A valid alternative toa lazy day lying on the beach sunbathing can be a visit to the Sendoukia Tombs. Let’s start by saying that it is an experience only forthose who want to walk as it is necessary to take a somewhatdemanding route in the mountains but we will talk about this later.
The Sendoukia tombsare located in the north west direction of the Skopelos island just above the Mount Karia plateau more or less eight kilometersfrom the capital Skopelos Town. In the immediate vicinity is the Agios Efstathios Monastery, now deserted, with its single navechurch from the 18th century decorated with flowers and old preciousicons. Mount Karia, on the other hand, must be emphasized that it isknown for its source of very pure water where you can also drink.
The tombs dating isnot yet well defined, we speak of the Roman era, early Christian upto the Neolithic era, the fact is that even today it has not beenpossible to determine the period of their construction. Threesarcophagi dug into the rock with a length of two and a half meterscovered in part by massive slabs of slate and with a rectangularshape. Who wanted them and why this is also a bit of a mystery, alegend tells that in the Middle Ages when the legendary pirateBarbarossa tried to plunder the island, he was rejected by theinhabitants who also killed some marauders who were then buried inthe tombs together to 12 chests of gold and that to protect the lootthey became ghosts and scare anyone who wanted to steal it. Thetheory that they were family tombs of some wealthy lineage is morelikely.
But you climb up here notonly for the very interesting archaeological finds, but above all forthe view. An infinite space on the Aegean with its colors up to the Alonissos island to get to the Evia, Skiathos, Pelion islandand on particularly clear days up to the Chalkidiki Peninsula and seeMount Olympus.
Here comes the hardest part if we can use this adjective. Solet’s start by saying that you have to reach the Kastro and then turnright towards the Skopelos – Loutraki provincial road. After onekilometer, turn left towards Mount Karya and continue for sixkilometers until the road ends where you will have to leave yourvehicle. At this point a dirt path starts which crosses the hill anda landscape with views to immortalize, in twenty minutes it will takeyou to the plateau where the tombs are located and where the view isreally crazy.
A stage to include among thethings to do and see in Skopelos if you love nature and history, awalk in the middle of a quiet, primitive and still intact environmentthat will be a beautiful parenthesis in your holiday in Greece.
