Poros Village Kefalonia

The picturesque Poros village is located in the southeast of Kefalonia about five kilometers before the Skala village.

It is located in the Pronnoi region rich in lush and dense Mediterranean vegetation, gentle hills, natural springs, gorges, beautiful white pebble beaches with crystal clear waters and Mount Atros where the oldest monastery of Kefalonia is located.

A very quiet location where there is everything you need, perfect for families with children or couples who want a relaxing holiday surrounded by magnificent nature. Here ‘no nightlife, only traditional taverns where you can enjoy dishes based on the freshest products, a few cafes and a few bars where you can sip a cocktail after dinner.

Poros was one of the first ports to equip itself to host private boats and yachts as well as the port that connects Killini on the mainland where you also leave to reach the Zakynthos island.

From very ancient origins, Poros was the city of Pronnoi as can be seen from the remains of the acropolis and was part of the Tretapoli alliance of the four main cities of Kefalonia in the classical period.

From the excavations, however, it is assumed that it was already inhabited in the Roman period as in the area of Tzanato about four kilometers inland there is a Mycenae tomb with a diameter of seven meters.

If you have your own vehicle about thirty kilometers to the north, there is the Drogarati Cave, one of the main attractions of Kefalonia dating back to one hundred million years ago, formed by two rooms about one hundred meters deep where in the first higher up called Royal Balcony stalactites and stalagmites, while the second called Sala dell’Apotheosi with an amphitheater shape with a domed ceiling, has perfect acoustics so much so that concerts with a unique atmosphere are often organized. It was dedicated to the cult of the Water Lilies as per finds you can find inside.

Another place to visit if you are in Poros during your Greek holiday is the monastery of Mount Atron which is located right above the bay at a height of 760 meters above sea level. It dates back to the 8th century and its monastic architecture is unique. Unfortunately, between earthquakes and fires it was destroyed many times, but each time the monks have rebuilt it. Today the imposing medieval tower and the houses of the religious are preserved. Getting there is not difficult, with a pleasant walk in the middle of the vegetation but you will certainly be captivated by the panorama that you can enjoy from up here, especially if you venture to see the sun rise. It is dedicated to the birthday of Our Lady which is celebrated on 8 September with a big party.

Poros Beach

In reality there are two beaches because the village of Poros has two inlets, the first refers to the port where boats dock and ferries arrive from the mainland, the second smaller is where the coastline is equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas and a small pier. The seafront behind it with all possible amenities. Both have a beach of small white pebbles with a turquoise blue sea. Going south at the end of the village, we find a small wild and off the beaten path cove called Ragia. A small piece of paradise with an enchanting sea embraced by green mountains.

How to get to Poros

Depending on where you will have your accommodation, always follow the south east direction. If you do not have your own transport, a bus service operates every day from Argostoli the capital.

Poros is worth a half day, maybe you can combine it with a visit to the Drogarati Cave and the Melissani Lake and take a bath before leaving.
