Odeon Kos

The Odeon is a building from the 2nd century AD discovered by the archaeologist Laurenzi in 1929. It is located in Kos Town in the Leof. Grigoriou street n. 51. Admission is free.

From the Roman period, the Odeon was one of the most important public buildings in the past of Kos  as it was used as the seat of the local senate as well as to host musical events.

Restored in 1999 it can accommodate up to 750 people. Pentagon-shaped and initially covered, has the cavea (the tiers) facing north and supported by salt with barrel vaults according to the Roman use on masonry pillars. Fourteen rows of marble seats, some of which have been restored, divided by a two-section corridor divided in turn by four staircases. Under the stairs, two semicircular arcades and a series of galleries once decorated with marble statues placed in niches. The orchestra floor was decorated with marble works while the floors were all mosaics.

Currently the Kos Odeon is used for cultural events or concerts as the acoustics are perfect.

A beautiful and interesting excursion to combine with some other archaeological site during your holidays in Greece on the island of Kos.
