NORTH KARPATHOS TREKKING PROGRAM
1st day
Arrival in Karpathos, transfer to the hotel in Diafani and freeday.
2nd day
Departure at 8.00/9.00 after breakfast, return at 4.00 pm (depending on the itinerary). Excursion to the Olympos village and climb to the top of the Profiti Ilias. Transfer by car to Olympos, a beautiful village in the northern part of Karpathos which passes through traditional villages, lush forests and verdant cliffs to reach it. The village populated by around 400 inhabitants who still dedicate themselves to agriculture has a lifestyle where primitive customs still play a very important role. Reached Olympos you climb towards the peak of the Profiti Ilias to 718 meters to enjoy the wonderful view of the Aegean Sea. Returning to the village you can have lunch in a typical tavern or explore the surroundings. For the return you can choose whether to walk down via Ag. Konstantinos for Diafani or take the transfer by car. (agree with the transference on the same day the time). Distance from Diafani: 8-10 km. Estimated travel time: 5,5 – 7 hours.
3rd day
Departure at 8.00/9.00 after breakfast, return at 4.00 pm (depending on the itinerary). Excursion to Hike Papa Minas Beach.A nice walk up and down the gentle slopes of pine trees, olive groves and wheat fields to the lovely Papa Minas Bay with its sandy and pebble beach and shady tamarisk trees. The beach is not equipped but still wild. Here you can swim, snorkel all day, sunbathe and relax. We return on foot to Diafani. Distance from Diafani: 7.5 km. Estimated travel time: 3,5 hours.
4th day
Departure at 8.00/9.00 after breakfast, return at 4.00 pm (depending on the itinerary). Excursion to the ancient Vroukounta from Avlona and then to the Vananta Bay.Transfer by car to Avlona. Through a stone path built in ancient times one descends to Vroukounta, an area considered mystical where once stood the ancient state of the city of Vrykous with ruins dating back to 3500 years ago. Who wants can try their hand at snorkeling or visit the St John Cave and the underwater treasures. We continue our journey and climb up to the village of Avlona where those who wish can enjoy a delicious home-made lunch in the tavern in a very famous area on the island for the quality of its food. After lunch we descend towards Vananta beach from a stone path towards the bay which is located above the coast offering incomparable views. Return from Avlona to Diafani by car. Distance from Diafani: 20 km. Estimated travel time: 5,5 hours.
5th day
Departure at 8.00/9.00 after breakfast, return at 4.00 pm (depending on the itinerary). Excursion to Tristomo and Steno. Transfer by car to Avalona and from there through a cobblestone road you arrive in Tristomo, a village almost deserted where only one family lives that refuses to leave its birthplace and with a natural harbor located in a protected bay on the north coast -western with spectacular views. Continue to Ag. Aikaterini and Steno, where you can almost “touch” the neighboring island of Sharia. From here a traditional fishing boat will take you back to Diafani. Cost of transfer by boat € 10 per person. Distance from Diafani: 8.4 km. Estimated travel time: 3,5 hours.
6th day
Departure 10.00 am return scheduled 4.00 pm (depends on the itinerary). Excursion to Sharia uninhabited island. With a boat you arrive on the island where you will walk to cross it and get to the Palatia Beach where there will be a lunch of bbq. Sharia Island was part of Karpathos until it was separated by natural erosion. In ancient times Sharia was one of the four cities of Karpathos. Everywhere historical traces with ancient monuments, ruins and settlements from the Neolithic age from the early Bronze Age. Sharia was also a base for Saracen pirates. According to mythology the island was created by the god Poseidon in a battle with the Titan Efialte who cut a piece from the side of Karpathos to bury it and destroy it. The ruins of the ancient city sank in the Strait of Tristomo located between Karpathos and Saria. The island is also an important habitat for various species of birds where marine organisms and animals reproduce. The northern part of Karpathos and the island of Sharia are Natura 2000 protected areas. Return by boat to Diafani. Cost of the excursion € 20 per person + 10 € if you want lunch, drinks not included. Distance from Diafani: 8 km. Estimated travel time: 3,5 hours.
