Mykonos Town the capital, is located in the central part on the west side of the Mykonos island. Populated in the seventies by the Hippy movement, today it has become one of the most glamorous and sought after destinations in the world where VIP and ordinary mortals let themselves be fascinated by the atmosphere that you breathe.
Built just behind a slope, Mykonos Town like but most of the inhabited centers of the Greek Islands, has small and labyrinthine alleys (they served to confuse and discourage pirates and marauders in antiquity), whitewashed plastered houses with blue windows, streets designed in gray and white tones, churches of all sizes and glimpses that will leave you breathless.
In recent years, design hotels, exclusive villas with swimming pools, houses renovated by famous architects have taken the place of the old houses once used by fishermen and locals, thus becoming an important center for art and a very popular destination for those love beautiful things. Numerous boutiques with luxury brands will drive you crazy during your shopping, while delicious cafes and evening clubs will make you enjoy unforgettable moments. The gastronomic offer in Mykonos Town has also been refined and you can delight your taste buds with a wide choice of restaurants offering cuisine based on Greek tradition but revisited in a modern key.
Mykonos Town despite so much opulence (the prices are really very high but the quality ratio is worth them all), it still has what I don’t know of pure, where it is still possible to find an uncontaminated natural landscape, try a strong emotion to admire the sunset maybe sitting with a colorful cocktail in Little Venice , or getting lost with your nose up ‘in the old city between narrow streets and shops that sell everything and more’. All this is Mykonos Town and the whole island, a harmonious mix between luxury and simple things.
Greek mythology narrates that Mykonos was created by the God Zeus after the legendary fight against the Giants (Gigantomachia) who were defeated by the Gods and were torn to pieces and the remains of their bodies thrown into the sea and falling turned into rock thus giving life to some Aegean islands such as Mykonos. Its name derives from one of the sons of Anio king of Delos the island in front of Mykonos important archaeological site where the god Apollo and the goddess Artemis were born.
Dominated by various empires, the Mykonos city before 88 BC the year in which the Delos island was razed to the ground was very prosperous and rich. During the Byzantine tyranny it was included in the Acaia province and then fell into the hands of the Venice Republic after the surrender of Constantinople. It later became the refuge of the pirate Barbararossa until the Turkish occupation.
Let’s say that the whole city is actually to be discovered and as usual everything is always very subjective. Certainly not to miss the neighborhood of Little Venice or Piccola Venezia so called for its similarity, a picturesque corner with the old houses with colorful balconies on the water, with its mysterious maze and where chic clubs overlooking the sea will give you sunsets and romantic dinners.
And still the famous Paraportiani Church at the bottom of the port in the Kastro district, the oldest of the island dating back to the XV and XVII century to be reached at sunset when a play of colors makes it all magical. Among the 600 churches scattered throughout the territory, the Paraportian Orthodox Church is a simple building with an accentuating white color during the day, which includes four other small churches (they are called Agios Sozontas, Agioi Anargyroi, Agia Anastasia and Agios Efstathios). Unfortunately it is almost always impossible to visit it because it is closed to the public but also from the outside it is a pleasure for the eyes. The area of the Paraportiani Church is the ideal place to take a suggestive photograph to keep in the luggage of the memories of your holidays in Greece in Mykonos.
And don’t we want to take a trip to the legendary windmills ? Above a small hill, the symbol of Mykonos stands out, the 5 windmills of the 16th century, relics of the ancient rural economy of the island. From the mighty white walls and thatched roofs they offer a crazy view of the sea.
For compulsive shopping sufferers, on the other hand, a must is on Matoyanni Street. A long and narrow street that starts from the old port to Litte Venice, where there are shops for all tastes in high fashion, ethnic shops and souvenir shops of local crafts where it will be impossible to go home without buying something.
As for culture, however, you will be spoiled for choice for museums. From that of Popular Art near the Paraportiani Church, the Aegean Naval Museum in the Odos Enopion Dinamenon district with a collection of models from 1500 BC, to the Archaeological Museum also near the port with archaeological finds ranging from I to VIII century BC and finally the Lena’s House a traditional nineteenth century residence with the name of the last owner Mrs. Lena Scivanou dating back to the nineteenth century to admire the customs and habits of the bourgeois families with lace, decorative objects and sumptuous mirrors.
Do we want to talk about nightlife in Mykonos town? We just tell you to try and believe, being able to explain is really very difficult. Considered the most unbridled and transgressive in all of Greece so much as to compare it to that of Ibizia in Spain, it is a non stop of beach parties, clubs with evenings themed and a lot of fun. Look at the list of the most fashionable places we have compiled in another article (Nightlife in Mykonos).
So at the end of things to do in Mykonos Town there are really many, our usual advice is to make a list and try to fit all these wonders that are absolutely worth discovering. Also remember the excursions that leave from the capital every day to the Rhenia island, Delos island and Tinos island, a pleasant trip out of town full of history and beautiful places.
