Another gem of the Naxos island is the small Moutsouna village which is located in the north east part about ten kilometers from the picturesque Apiranthos resort.
The thing that unites these two small pearls of Naxos is related to the export of marble. At one time the Moutsouna port was the point where the material for export to Greece and Europe was loaded and today you can still see the cable car system that was used for the transport of the stone.
A small agglomeration with few houses, a few taverns directly on the sea, a cafeteria and a minimarket for essential needs, nothing more ‘. The beauty lies precisely in this, however, here time seems to have stopped and flows with almost disarming tranquility, the classic fishing village that we all have in our imagination when we think of Greece.
Moutsouna bay offers two wonderful beaches, one is Agios Ioannis, which is located right in front of the village and the view of the old port is almost magical. Of fine and clear sand with extremely crystalline waters, and a shallow bottom perfect for families with small children. It is not equipped so you need to have everything you need if you decide to spend the day there. The second one is located further south and is the Tigani beach. It too with a clear and clean sea, a small coast of soft sand and obviously not served but free and natural.
The Moutsouna village does not offer many accommodation facilities, only a few studios or guest houses so if you decide to spend your holidays in Greece here, book as soon as possible, otherwise it will be very difficult to find accommodation.
Definitely one of the most peaceful spots on the Naxos island where one comes exclusively to rest and enjoy the amazing surrounding landscape. And yes, because only the journey from Apiranthos village to Moutsouna deserves! A narrow and full of curves road that, however, as if by magic turned a hairpin bump into your face a postcard glimpse and at a certain point you can also see the island of Donoussa that curvy from a distance looks out in front of Naxos.
Another reason to come and visit the Moutsouna village is definitely the food. As a good fishing village, the taverns always offer local Greek cuisine based on fresh fish, with ancient and traditional recipes.
For those who have the soul of an explorer, the old marble mines and other beautiful beaches such as Kleidos beach and Psili Ammos beach are excellent places to stop.
For sure the car or the scooter are the best means. You must reach the Apirathos village passing through the Chalki village and Filoti and follow the road signs for Moutsouna. Attention to the road because it passes from about six hundred and fifty meters of altitude up to the sea level and the passage is downhill so it is recommended to keep a limited speed. If, on the other hand, you are among the lucky ones to have a boat owned or to have the possibility of renting it in the small harbor, you can moor, obviously the rule is that the one who arrives first better stays.
Prepare a nice itinerary through the valley and remember to mark Moutsouna among the things to see in Naxos.
