Lesbos Island

Lesbos: An Island to Discover

Lesbos, also known as Lesvos by the Greeks, is located in northern Greece, very close to the Turkish coast. A hidden gem in the Northern Aegean Sea, it spans over 1,600 square kilometers and is the third largest of all the Greek Islands. With volcanic origins and a landscape that is rich and ever-changing, despite its beauty, it remains relatively untouched by mass tourism. In recent years, this has been due in part to its unfortunate location near the East and Turkey, making it a hub for immigration.

For the more adventurous travelers, though not due to danger but simply the challenge of the journey, as there are no direct flights Lesbos will offer a big surprise. The island lacks nothing, and in fact, it may have even more to offer than the more popular islands. Check out our guide on How to Get to Lesbos.

A Paradise of Nature

With its volcanic origin, Lesbos has undergone several earthquakes throughout its history, which have shaped its landscape into a surprising paradise. Majestic mountains like the Leptimno Massif in the north, with the peak of Profitis Elia reaching 968 meters, thick pine forests, endless stretches of olive trees, oaks, chestnut trees, and a rich variety of vegetation await you. There are no rivers or lakes, but in their place, you can admire stunning waterfalls (especially in the south) and miraculous thermal springs, known for millennia for their healing properties, particularly for conditions like rheumatism, which attract many Greeks each year.

Lesbos’ geographical position places it along one of the main migratory routes. The salt mines in Kalloni to the west are home to fifty pairs of herons and many other bird species, some of which are quite rare. The Skala caves, also on the western side, provide refuge for the endangered Mediterranean monk seals, and at the Limonas Monastery, a protected area, you can spot wild birds.

Beautiful Beaches and Seas

Lesbos boasts some of the most beautiful and peaceful beaches in all of Greece. Molyvos, with its golden sandy beach and medieval fortress perched on the headland, is one of the island’s most picturesque spots. To the south, Skala Kallonis beach is perfect for relaxation, with taverns serving the freshest fish. And you can’t talk about Lesbos without mentioning Eressos, famous as the birthplace of the poet Sappho, with its beach offering crystal-clear waters framed by spectacular mountains. Beaches to suit all tastes you’ll be hard-pressed to visit them all!

A Dive into Mythology and History

Lesbos is deeply connected to both mythology and history. The poet Sappho, born here, left an indelible mark not only on the local culture but also on world literature. Her works, full of passion and emotion, made the island famous for “Sapphism,” a term linked to female love. After an unrequited love for Phaon, who left her for another, she tragically took her life by leaping from the cliff at Porto Katsiki in Lefkada.

Adventure and Discovery

A visit to the capital, Mytilene, is a must! Shaped like an amphitheater, it boasts a beautiful Byzantine castle from the 14th century, perched on a pine covered hill overlooking the stunning bay. The mix of old houses and modern buildings blends harmoniously, giving the town a unique charm. Bustling and full of life, with its large port welcoming visitors, Mytilene offers excellent cuisine and many cultural points of interest, such as churches and museums, not to mention its waterfront, the heart of the city. Northeast of Mytilene, you’ll find an ancient theater from the Hellenistic period that can hold 10.000 spectators, with astounding acoustics.

A visit to the petrified forest in Sigri, in the northwest, is unmissable. Formed by a massive volcanic explosion 20 million years ago, its ash covered all the trees in the area, leading to the fossilization of the subtropical forest.

In the north, you’ll find the town of Molyvos, also known as Mithymna, a popular destination for Lesbos vacations. Dating back to the Bronze Age, it is dominated by a medieval Genoese fortress that reaches down to the sea. Stone and wooden houses cling to the hillside, with cobblestone streets and all the modern amenities, along with a beautiful beach for those days when you just want to relax.

In the center of the bay dividing Lesbos into two parts lies Skala Kallonis, a traditional fishing village with fresh seafood taverns, small hotels, a charming square shaded by large plane trees, and a local beach perfect for a swim. In the first week of August, Skala Kallonis hosts a fun festival dedicated to sardines, for which it’s considered the capital. Birdwatching enthusiasts will find numerous species to observe, especially near the salt flats surrounding the area.

In the north, another must-visit is Skala Sikaminias, where you’ll take a trip back in time among the sanctuaries of Zeus, Hera, Dionysus, and the temple dedicated to the mythic god Apollo, one of the most sacred monuments for the Greek people.

An Authentic Gastronomic Experience

Lesbos’ cuisine is a journey through traditional Greek flavors. One of its finest products is the olive oil made from the island’s abundant olive groves. Another highlight is the wine, especially from the Plomari region in the southeast. And of course, we can’t forget ouzo, the most famous liqueur in all of Greece who hasn’t enjoyed at least a glass?

Why Choose Lesbos?

If you’re looking for an island that offers a perfect mix of nature, history, pristine beaches, and delicious cuisine, Lesbos is the ideal choice. Here, you can explore a side of Greece that remains genuine and uncrowded, far from the mass tourism found on other islands. Lesbos will surprise you with its authenticity and offer unique experiences in a peaceful and naturally beautiful setting.

Whether you’re a hiking enthusiast, a history lover, or simply looking to relax, Lesbos truly has it all.

Where to Stay in Lesbos with Family

Lesbos is perfect for families because, first of all, it’s not as expensive as other islands, so you can enjoy a wonderful vacation without going over budget. Plus, it’s off the beaten path for typical Greek island itineraries. If you have young children, the island’s beaches are like natural playgrounds where they can play safely, and they are easily accessible. Lesbos has all the amenities and services needed for families, as it’s home to a large year-round population. For family friendly locations, we recommend staying in Plomari, Molyvos, or near Mytilene to be close to the sea and in a strategic location for exploring the island.

Where to Stay in Lesbos for Couples

If you’re planning a romantic getaway, Lesbos is a perfect destination. With its vast size, the island offers endless adventures, from chasing unforgettable sunsets to trying new activities together, or simply lounging on a beach like Skala Eressos for a day of sunbathing. You can also explore the island, stopping in charming taverns to savor local cuisine and fresh fish.

As for accommodation, the island offers a wide variety of choices. If you’re staying for two weeks, consider dividing your vacation between several destinations to see as much as possible. For couples, we recommend Sigri, a village where you won’t even need air conditioning, located at the island’s edge, where twilight is a miracle of Mother Nature and time stands still. Alternatively, the lively capital is a great base from which to explore the island during the day.
