Discover Lefkada: The Jewel of the Ionian Islands
Lefkada, also known as Lefkos (meaning “white” in Greek, due to its white cliffs) or Leucade, is one of the most enchanting gems of the Ionian Islands archipelago. It lies between Corfù and Kefalonia, off the coast of Akranania. It belongs to the Eptanisa, the seven Greek islands of the Ionian Sea. Its unique geographical location makes it easily accessible, with a convenient fifty kilometer long bridge connecting it to the mainland. It is nicknamed “the emerald of the Ionians” for the beauty of its waters and its stunning nature.
Nature and Breathtaking Landscapes
Among its sister islands, Lefkada is the most mountainous, with peaks reaching almost 1.200 meters, such as Mount Elati, also known as Stravrota, surrounded by hills. Plains cover one third of the island, and the east coast is known for its calm waters and scenic views, while the west is much wilder, with breathtaking coves and some of the most beautiful sunsets. Around Lefkada, there are several small uninhabited islands like Kythros, Thilia, Skorpidi, and Sparti, as well as Madouri and Skorpios, the latter previously owned by the Onassis family. Lefkada boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean, perfect for those seeking relaxation and adventure. It’s no surprise that Lefkada is called “the Caribbean of the Ionian” for its enchanting white sand beaches, crystal clear waters in varying shades, and lush vegetation made up of pines, strawberry trees, oaks, olives, plane trees, and cypresses, along with a rich flora that, with its seasonal colors, makes the island a small earthly paradise.
History and Mythology
According to Greek mythology, Lefkada was the true homeland of Odysseus, for which he had to endure harsh trials and unforeseen obstacles before being able to return. It is also remembered for tales of love and death. On Cape Lefkada, there was the temple of Apollo, and Homer described it as the entrance to the underworld. Another legend tells that it was here that the poet Sappho, heartbroken from unrequited love, ended her life by jumping from the cliff of Porto Katsiki.
According to archaeological excavations, Lefkada has been inhabited since the Neolithic period in the 4th millennium BC. In the 7th century BC, it was colonized by the Corinthians, who founded new cities, and in 650 BC, construction of the canal began. Lefkada participated in various battles, including the Battle of Salamis and the Battle of Plataea in 480 BC. It also supported Corinth, allied with Sparta, in the Peloponnesian War, and in 343 BC, it joined Athens to fight against Philip II of Macedon, but, as history tells us, this ended in defeat, and the island became part of Macedonia. Lefkada experienced periods of Roman and Byzantine rule and, due to its strategic location, endured numerous pirate attacks. It also had a brief period of Italian rule until 1331 under the Sicilian Orsini family, who built the fortress of Aghia Mavra. The Turks arrived in 1479 and ruled until 1684. The Venetians were present until 1797, followed by the French under Napoleon Bonaparte, who improved agriculture on the island. In 1810, Lefkada passed under British rule, which saw the construction of the first aqueduct and road network. In 1864, the Treaty of Union of the Ionian Islands was signed, granting Lefkada independence.
