Lefkada Beaches

Also known as the “Caribbean of Greece”, Lefkada island has a wealth of beaches with soft white sand and a sea ranging from light blue to intense Indian which contrasts with the surrounding nature.

As always, a tip on the ones to put on the list for your holiday on Lefkada island:

Kathisma Beach

In the northwest part of the Lefkada island, about fifteen kilometers from the capital and near the characteristic Agios Nikitas village, we find Kathisma Beach. It is a long beach (they say the most beautiful on the island) with soft white sand and a spectacular deep turquoise sea. Surrounded by green hills despite being the favorite beach for young people due to the possibility of a vast choice of games and water sports, and for the parties organized by the locals on the coast, it still gives a feeling of isolation and peace. Be careful when there is wind because the sea creates big waves and can become dangerous if you are not good swimmers. Also ideal for families with children on calm days. It is equipped with countless sunbeds, umbrellas and offers a variety of choices between typical taverns, beach bars and cafes for something fresh and to fill the hole in the stomach that the sea usually provides. Reaching Kathisma is very easy from any point of the island because the beach is located not far from the main road. It also has a large free car park. Seeing is believing!!!!

Pefkoulia Beach

Near the picturesque fishing Agios Nikitas village about ten kilometers from the capital in the northwest direction is Pefkoulia Beach. It is a large beach of fine white sand with a particular turquoise color, with cliffs and surrounded by maritime pines that give that touch of wildness as well as shelter from the hot Greek sun. It is always very crowded especially in the summer and is very suitable for families with children. It is equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas for one part with a bar for a fresh drink or something to eat, while the other part is free and the water is even clearer. If you decide to stay in the unserved area, remember to bring something to shelter yourself. Finally, the last stretch of the coast is a naturalistic area so if you want a total tan, go there. To reach it is very simple because the road is all paved and once you arrive in Agios Nikitas follow the signs. A large, completely free car park at your disposal. Pefkoulia Beach is one of the places where you can admire the sunset with crazy colors.

Egremmi Beach

Perhaps the most difficult to reach as it is in an area far from urban centers and due to its more than 300 steps carved into the rock. If you are not so adventurous there is always the most comfortable way from the sea with the numerous excursions that depart mainly from Agios Nikitas and Vasiliki. It is located in the southwest part of the Lefkada island and is a beautiful beach, with a coast of soft white sand and small glittering pebbles with a clear sea and light blue and blue shades that make the landscape almost exotic. Obviously it is always very crowded especially in the summer season, but being quite long you can find a quieter place under the white cliffs with a short walk. It is equipped with sunbeds and deckchairs (the average price is €7 for the whole day, two sunbeds + umbrella) and a small bar for something to eat or drink. The most beautiful moment at Egremmi Beach is definitely the sunset when the sun disappears into the sea as if by magic. As I said, there are two ways to reach it, either by sea or by taking the main road and turning at Komilio, then following the signs for Athani or Egremmi. Pay attention to the time you decide to go because there is space to park near the staircase and once you have run out of space you will be forced to put the car on the sides which are slightly sloping (you will notice how much when you return after a day in beach and made the terrible 350 steps). Another warning concerns the wind conditions, when Eolo decides to annoy himself, the sea at Egremmi tends to swell and it is dangerous to swim unless you are perfect swimmers.

Agiofili Beach

Agiofili Beach is located in the southeastern part of the Lefkada island near the picturesque Vassiliki village where we suggest you stop and eat in some typical tavern because they always offer fresh fish with good value for money. It is an enchanting beach of soft white sand with a sea of crazy colors with the most varied shades of blue. Another advice of ours is to go and visit it early in the morning because, being very popular, it is quite crowded in the summer. The surrounding landscape with its high clear cliffs, brings out even more the beauty of the waters which are very crystalline and generally calm also because they are protected by rocky promontories. Alas, the water is a bit chilly, but as I always say, it’s just a moment. The beach is equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas (a set of 1 umbrella and two sunbeds costs around €7 a day) and a bar where you can stock up on water and something to eat quickly. To reach it like all beautiful things is a bit difficult if you decide not to do it from the sea with the boats that leave from the port of the village of Vassiliki as you have to take a piece of dirt road that is not exactly comfortable but the worst is the small path always overhanging dirt road (the problem is basically not the descent which is demanding anyway, but the ascent after a sunny day).

Porto Katsiki Beach

Defined by someone as the most beautiful beach in Europe, PortO Katsiki Beach is located in the southwestern part of the Lefkada island, about forty kilometers from the capital. With an almost exotic flavor thanks to the high rocky cliffs that surround it with a light color, covered with luxuriant vegetation, it is made of white sand with crystalline waters with iridescent colors of turquoise. It is an equipped beach, a set of an umbrella and two sunbeds costs around €7 a day, but I recommend you, given the popularity of the place, arrive early because “seating” places are snapped up. A service on the beach through a restaurant with an order or by telephone or through the boy passing by the coast will also allow you to eat directly comfortably on your sunbed. To reach the beach there are two alternatives, one via the taxi boats that leave from Vassiliki and Nidri, the other with your own transport up to the top of the cliff (where the panorama will leave you breathless) where you will leave your car or scooter, then descending via an obviously unpaved stairway but not difficult to do. Near the car park there is a kiosk to eat something or have a refreshing drink. A third alternative but you must have an 4WD absolutely, is just after the Vassiliki village via a dirt road in the mountain with a spectacular drop to the sea. Given its westward position, the sunsets are breathtaking, so get your camera ready to immortalize this magical moment.

Agios Ioannis Beach

Agios Ioannis beach is located in the north of the Lefkada island right next to the capital. It is a long coastline of golden sand with a sea of many shades ranging from blue to green. It is very subject to the winds as it is completely open and not sheltered by promontories and is the favorite destination for those who love sports such as windsurfing and kite surfing and consequently not really suitable for families with children. It is a well-equipped beach with sunbeds and umbrellas and a wide choice of beach bars, typical taverns and shops. Some old windmills give the area a special atmosphere. On the left side of the coast the Church of Agios Ioannis which hides some beautiful icons. Furthermore, from Agios Ioannis, you can see the Faneromeni Monastery dedicated to the Virgin, one of the most important sacred places on the island (please dress appropriately if you want to visit it). It can be reached very easily from the main road and then go northwest.

Mikros Gialos Beach

It is located in the southeast part of the Lefkada island near the Poros village. It is a beautiful beach of white sand and small pebbles with a seabed that descends slowly. Needless to say, the sea that bathes it is crystal clear and with phenomenal colors. It is a beach very suitable for families with children as being protected by two large promontories with lush vegetation that make the environment very relaxing and very natural, it is well protected from the winds with waters that are almost always calm and flat. Ideal for lovers of long swims and snorkelling enthusiasts. The coast is well equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas (a set of an umbrella plus two sunbeds costs around €6 a day), bars, restaurants with nice tables on the beach under the shade of trees and, added value, the sea breeze it will refresh you and let you enjoy your lunch in complete relaxation. Mikros Gialos Beach, can be reached very easily from the main road towards the Poros village, and from there it descends towards the sea.

Milos Beach

Let’s say that here Mother Nature has really worked so hard and this is confirmed by the fact that Milos Beach is a bit difficult to reach and without any kind of comfort. It is a long and hidden white beach between lush green hills and an intense turquoise sea with transparent and clear waters. Sometimes it is windswept but most of the time the sea is calm and perfect for long swims or snorkelling given the beauty of the seabed especially in the part where there is a small promontory. It is not equipped at all so bring water, sunscreen, something to eat and if you can even an umbrella to shelter from the hot Greek sun. Considering the inconveniences of the beach due to the fact that it doesn’t offer any services and the effort to get there, it is almost always uncrowded. From here the moment of sunset becomes like a moment of pure ecstasy and introspection when the sun dies in the sea, not to be missed and enjoy it all. To reach Milos Beach you have to reach the Agios Nikitas village (where we recommend to take a tour because it is wonderful), about halfway to the entrance of the village on the left, follow the indications of the path to take which is not tiring but if done in the hottest hours it is not pleasant since you are under the beating sun, walking for about 15 or 20 minutes, you go down and you arrive at the beach. The panorama while you are arriving from the small promontory is enchanting. Ideal for extreme nature lovers and for those seeking total relaxation.

Afteli Beach

We find Afteli beach in the southeastern part of the Lefkada island about thirty kilometers from the capital and three kilometers from the  Evgiros village. A remote beach, difficult to reach but for this reason it remains one of the most secret and peaceful of the whole island. A small cove of reduced dimensions in a graceful inlet that presents itself with a coast of clear pebbles, transparent and crystalline waters, a sea with sparkling colors with seabed rich in marine fauna and flora, perfect for snorkelling and diving lovers. Surrounded by cliffs that shelter it from the winds, in fact it is one of the places where from spring to autumn it will be very difficult to find rough seas and in addition they give it this idyllic landscape. A natural paradise that we hope will remain where there are few sunbeds or umbrellas, but you can spread out your towel wherever you like and enjoy a wonderful day at the sea. The presence of a typical tavern can give you food and drink during your stay. And here comes the beauty, as we said before, Afteli beach is a hidden gem precisely because of the difficulty in reaching it. Just four kilometers from the main road but for the last three unpaved, full of holes and let’s face it a little steep but which offers a panorama that will leave you speechless.

Kaminia Beach

Kaminia beach is located in the northeastern part of Lefkada less than nine kilometers from the capital. A small jewel near the Tsoukalades village with an almost magical atmosphere, a beach of sand, pebbles, stones and rock fragments, in short, more and more for all tastes. Behind steep cliffs covered with wonderful Mediterranean maquis, especially ancient pines, clear and spotless waters, a bright turquoise sea and interesting seabed for snorkelling and diving enthusiasts who will absolutely have to bring all the equipment to explore this fantastic underwater world . Given its size (there are at most a dozen umbrellas), Kaminia beach is ideal for those looking for a stunning sea, unspoiled nature and tranquility for a day at the beach. The best time to enjoy such beauty is always in the morning as there are no waves. For discoveries, a mysterious cave to be explored that can be reached via a few steps. It is not equipped with parasols or deck chairs but there is a small kiosk where you can find something quick to eat and drink. The only big problem of Kaminia beach are the algae which sometimes settle on the shore but don’t worry, the Greeks who know a lot have left a rake available for everyone to remove them and therefore create their own private space. Reaching it like all beautiful things is a little challenging but still doable. The most comfortable way is on foot from the village of Tsoukaledes via a narrow winding and downhill road. If you have your own vehicle, however, you can get to the free car park (which, however, can accommodate a maximum of ten cars if you are disciplined in parking) and then still make the last stretch on foot. The road that leads to Kaminia beach offers very scenic views to capture in the perfect photo.

Ammoussa Beach

Ammoussa beach is located southwest of Lefkada in the southernmost part of the island. We can say that it is part of the Marantochori village, Nidri is located about 22 kilometers away while Vasiliki is 10. A natural paradise made up of a fabulous emerald sea, crystal clear waters with a seabed that descends slowly, perfect for families with children, a coast of clear pebbles so it is advisable to wear rock shoes to avoid injury. The rocks that surround it are a natural playground for snorkelers who can have fun discovering the very lively underwater wonders in this stretch of Lefkada. Enclosed in a splendid bay with still wild and pristine nature, it almost looks like a natural swimming pool and is equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas, toilets, shower bars, cafes and a few taverns if you want a complete meal with your legs comfortably under the table. For the more independent there is also a completely free stretch. There is also a small parking lot for vehicles and here too the argument that first come first served is valid. Reaching it is not difficult as the road is paved and also without too many bends.

Megali Petra Beach

Megali Petra beach is located on the western side north of Lefkada about fifteen kilometers from the Kalamitsi village. Its name in Greek means “big stone” owes it to its spectacular blocks of stone that magically emerge from the sea near the shore. Around the Megali Petra beach high cliffs that shelter it a little from the winds but not really so much let’s face it but you will never find high waves, covered with rich vegetation make this place a real Eden still wild and intact. The coast is made up of small white stones (they are so small that you won’t need rock shoes), the sea has crazy colors with different shades of blue up to intense turquoise and then off to sparkling blue, its waters are transparent and clear while the seabed drops quite quickly so if you are with children be careful. It is perfect for snorkelers and for those who love to enjoy all this incredible nature. Megali Petra beach is partly equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas and bars where you can find something to eat and drink. A section, on the other hand, precisely on the left of the bar, passing the rocks, is completely free and this side is usually appreciated by naturists. Its position is one of the points where you can admire one of the most beautiful sunsets of Lefkada. Reaching it is not difficult even if be careful because the road is narrow and winding. A limited paid parking space is located just before arriving at the beach.

Nikiana Beach

Nikiana beach also called Episkopos is found northeast of Lefkada with its homonymous and pretty village about ten kilometers from the capital. Considered one of the best on the island for its natural beauty and the services it offers. A not very large beach actually made of white sand mixed with pebbles, clear and transparent waters, a light blue sea up to turquoise with gently sloping seabeds, excellent for children and families. Behind it providential trees that give shade during the hottest hours. It is well equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars, taverns where you can taste local delicacies and classic Greek cuisine. Its strategic position is also highly sought after in terms of accommodation, which is not lacking here. You can choose between small hotels and apartments up to independent villas and discover this wonderful island in all directions. Even those who love sports during their holidays in Greece will find various water sports in which to try their hand at Nikiana beach or you can opt for a nice excursion on foot or by bike among the expanses of olive trees and the mountain paths, perhaps even going to visit the picturesque villages of Alexandros and Kolyvata. Reaching it is child’s play, just follow the main road and road signs. From Nidri and Vasiliki there are also public bus rides.

Avali Beach

Avali beach is located in the northwest part of Lekfada just below the Kalamitsi village. A coast of fine sand mixed with small clear pebbles, transparent and crystalline and almost always calm waters, a turquoise and shiny sea, in short, a real natural paradise still intact and uncontaminated. Despite all these beautiful features, Avali beach is not very popular with visitors who prefer Kavalikefta beach rather than Megali Petra beach and for this reason it is perfect for those who want to stay in peace and away from mass tourism without too much confusion but only with the sound of the sea. It is not equipped, you can put yourself wherever you like while for something to eat there is a small bar just before the beach where you will find food, drinks and even a comfortable shower. Avali beach is easily reached by heading west and following the road signs.

Agios Nikitas Beach

Agios Nikitas beach is located in the northwest part of Lefkada in the homonymous village about thirteen kilometers from the city of Lefkada. Once a simple fishing village, today Agios Nikitas has become a highly sought-after pole for a holiday in Lefkada as it is in a wonderful natural context and where services such as accommodation of all kinds, typical taverns, bars and shops are not lacking, making it so highly coveted for its still low costs with the consequence of overcrowding during the summer season. Agios Nikitas beach has a coastline of sand and small pebbles, clear and clear waters, an intense blue sea with a gently sloping seabed, perfect for families with children who gather en masse for a wonderful day at the beach . From our point of view, the naturalistic scenario surpasses all the rest, on the right of the coast there are rock formations shaped by atmospheric events where you can sunbathe or perform spectacular dives. The cliff behind is full of lush Mediterranean vegetation in a nutshell in this small corner of Lefkada nothing is missing. Shall we then put the beautiful sunset that you can see? Agios Nikitas beach is equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars and restaurants rather than small shops where you can find food and drink. A stretch of beach, on the other hand, is free for do-it-yourselfers, a section to be conquered. One flaw, the sun disappears in the afternoon so it would be better to enjoy it in the morning. It can be easily reached by motorbike, just follow the road signs. From Agios Nikitas, taxi boats leave every day to get to the beautiful beach of Lefkada.

Desimi Beach

We find Desimi beach in the Geni Peninsula in the south-eastern area of Lefkada about twenty kilometers from the capital and just six from the tourist resort of Nidri. Considered one of the most beautiful on the whole island, despite its beauty it is not very popular with tourists, perhaps due to the few road signs, making it a true paradise for a day at the beach. Enclosed in a bay backed by lush cliffs covered with Mediterranean scrub that shelter it from the winds, it has a beach of small stones and pebbles, a providential shade given by the ancient olive trees that grow on the beach, clear, transparent and always calm waters, a sea of a thousand shades of emerald with reflections that, depending on the light, become gold or silver and with a seabed that descends slowly, perfect for families with children where the little ones can have fun in safety while the grown-ups relax. It is not equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas but you can find pedal boats, kayaks or boats to discover the mysterious caves or hidden coves of the surroundings. As for catering, being between two large campsites Camping Desimi Beach and Santa Mavra, you will have no difficulty finding a typical tavern where you can savor local delicacies and classic Greek cuisine. To reach it, set the navigator for Camping Desini and you will have arrived.

Kalamitsi or Kavalikefta Beach

For lovers of nature and wild areas, Kalamitsi beach also called Kavalikefta beach is certainly a very suitable place for these needs. We find it on the northern west coast of the Lefkada island and it is a wonderful beach of fine white sand wedged in a beautiful bay, with a crystalline sea and a bright turquoise color that will make you seem to think you are in the Caribbean and not in Greece with cavities between the rocks which, based on how high the sun is, create plays of light and reflections that change the color of the sea. With a still unspoiled beauty, it has imposing rock formations scattered here and there which, falling sheer into the sea, seem to have been placed there on purpose, making the scenery unique and breathtaking. Kavalikefta beach is divided into an equipped part where upon your arrival at the parking lot you will also receive a sunbed and an umbrella, and a completely free area precisely on the left side of the parking lot, but you can also reach the free area by a small path between trees starting before a hairpin bend. A bar-restaurant for fresh drinks or quick dishes rather than a full meal based on local products and Mediterranean cuisine which also rents parasols and deck chairs. To reach it you have to take the main road and follow the signs to the village of Kalamitsi through vast olive groves and a narrow road. Then go down towards the sea and arrive at the parking lot. In short, it is very difficult to describe it in words, I advise you to see it with your own eyes.

Vasiliki Beach

Vasiliki beach, also called Ponti beach, is found in the southwest part of Lefkada in the homonymous country, a Mecca for surf lovers. A stupendous natural bay with mountains rich in thick vegetation and expanses of olive groves behind it which offers different sections suitable for an audience with different needs. The main beach named Vasiliki starts near the marina on the waterfront. It measures three hundred meters and is made up of gravel and here in the afternoon the wind picks up, becoming a very popular point for sportsmen who love activities where Aeolus is the protagonist. A large bar and a spot for renting boats rather than sports equipment. To the right instead, the Ponti beach begins, perfect for families with children as in addition to having a coastline of sand mainly mixed with a few small pebbles, it has a seabed that descends slowly and a long shoal that extends for about a hundred meters towards the sea. It goes without saying that the waters are clean, crystalline and of an intense blue. They are all equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars, typical taverns where you can taste classic Greek cuisine, small bars for something quick and light, shops, mini markets and various accommodation opportunities. There is no shortage of free areas where you can spread out your towel where you will feel better inspired. From Vasiliki, ferries leave for Kefalonia and Ithaca and numerous excursions to the most famous beaches of Lefkada such as Agiofili beach, Egremmi beach and Porto Katsiki beach which you can also reach by car following the road signs.

Gialos Beach

Gialos beach is located on the western south side of the Lefkada island about 35 kilometers from the capital. A wild beach, with unspoilt nature, very quiet where only a few want to get there because it is far away and in the direction of Porto Katisiki beach where everyone wants to go and therefore stops earlier? Surely this is also in addition to the fact that the road to get there is full of curves but we can confirm that it is one of the most beautiful and where you can relax enjoying a wonderful nature. A long stretch of coarse sand with a few pebbles, clean and turquoise waters with a rocky seabed, however, therefore not really suitable for families with children and for those with delicate feet (bring some rock shoes they might be useful). Given its position, the wind is sometimes felt here and creates small waves which can become dangerous if you are not an expert swimmer. It is well equipped with sun beds, umbrellas, bars, beach volleyball courts, taverns where you can eat something and a convenient parking. Reaching it is not difficult, just set the navigator on the beach and follow the paved road which, however, is quite narrow in many places. If, on the other hand, you are a walker, you can go down the slope but even in this case it is better if you are used to trekking because it is long and demanding.
