And here we are at one of the most beautiful beaches of the Kefalonia Island, Koroni Beach. We find it in the natural bay of Mounda about twenty kilometers from the capital Argostoli and about fifteen from Skala.
The nearest inhabited center is the Thiramonas village, a few houses at the foot of Mount Aenos, the largest mountain of the Ionian Islands with its eighty hunting inhabitants (the name derives from here) with traditional houses and a couple of taverns where you can find something to eat truly homemade.
Koroni beach is a beautiful cove surrounded by high steep cliffs full of luxuriant vegetation with an almost exotic scent, a golden sand coast with rocks towards the sides, a blue sea with clean and crystal clear waters that are always calm thanks to its favorable position . The seabed drops quickly so not really suitable for children but perfect for those who like to swim or snorkel.
To add charm to this beach, the small river that comes directly from Mount Aenos and flows directly into the sea at the end of its course. Once it was the refuge of the caretta-caretta turtles but unfortunately the clay of the cliffs slips down and settles on the beach every time it rains, making the environment too humid and inhospitable for these wonderful creatures. On the other hand, humans benefit from it, it will not be difficult to find someone completely sprinkled with green clay while indulging in a 100% natural beauty bath and above all free!
Koroni beach despite being one of the most remote, offers some comforts, nothing to mind, a few sunbeds and a few umbrellas that obviously grab the first ones who arrive. To drink or eat something instead there is nothing so if you decide to spend the whole day there, make sure you bring enough water and food. The more “spoiled” instead along the road that leads to the beach, can stop at the Melissinos Winery, one of the best in Kefalonia where they can taste its precious nectars.
Even sportsmen here will not have much to do except for long swims, a bit of snorkeling or walks to discover the area.
An experience to try if you have the opportunity is to stop and sleep on the beach for a night, under a starry sky, immersed in nature in the wild without noise or artificial lights, a real lost paradise. The less daring will still be able to enjoy another spectacle, the moment of sunset when the sea turns mauve and orange while the sun disappears as if by magic into the sea. And again, you can admire the sunset from the promontory where among other things you can enjoy a panoramic view of the horizon and the majestic Ionian Sea.
Being one of the most remote, reaching it is a bit challenging but still feasible. The road is unpaved, winding and even a little bumpy, let’s say that it would be better to have a quad or a 4×4 even if with a normal car, going slowly and being careful you can get there.
Then head south perhaps taking Skala as a reference point and then follow the signs for the village of Thiromonas. If you want, you can leave your vehicle on the road and go down on foot which is still pleasant especially for the view and on particularly clear days you can also spot the Zakynthos Island.
Finally, for lovers of walking, there are two paths that start from Skala or Mavratas that allow you to reach Koroni beach enjoying the magnificent landscape.
A further stop to be marked among the things to see in Kefalonia, certainly not so easy but that will amply repay the effort by giving you a wonderful day at sea.
