And here is another hidden gem and out of mass tourism, the Korakonisi fjord which is located in the southeastern part of Zakynthos seven kilometers from Porto Roxa.
In reality Korakonisi is a small islet of volcanic origin with an oblong shape, about fifty meters high, completely rocky and connected to the mainland by a majestic natural stone arch that extends towards an internal cavity that forms a sort of tunnel. Wild and of overwhelming beauty, it is the natural habitat for starfish, sea urchins and wonderful fish fauna and flora.
There is no shoreline only rocks shaped by the wind and salt, some flatter than the others where you can spread the towel and enjoy so much infinite magnificence by Mother Nature. One comes to Korakonisi to swim (I recommend you have to be an expert) in an emerald-colored sea with incredibly clean waters, to delight in tightrope dives from the arch where the greatest difficulty is not so much jumping as the seabed is deep and without boulders, but climb above given the height of twenty meters. If you decide this risk, it is advisable to wear a wetsuit to cushion the impact with the water. It goes without saying that there is no shade so bring a hat to shelter you from the hot summer sun of the Greek Islands.
If, on the other hand, you want something less dangerous but equally magnificent, you can swim to the left and enter the mysterious cave with crazy colors thanks to the concretions that cover the walls and, explore its interior by walking as the maximum depth reaches 30 centimeters.
A natural and unique monument that will make you discover a still unknown and intact corner of Zakynthos.
The journey itself is something special, you have to head towards the northern part on the west coast and reach the village of Kiliomeno, go through the green pine forests on the left side and continue towards Agios Leon where about a kilometer further, you will find the directions for Korakonisi. Turn left and follow the road towards the sea. At a certain point it stops, here you will have to park and continue on foot. You access the islet and the coast via steps carved into the rock and we recommend that you be very careful because they are slippery, there is still a rope to cling to and then safely descend.
They are from Kilomeno to Korakonisi about seven kilometers, but remember that for this stretch there is no shadow of human presence, no bars or shops so make sure you have supplies of water, food and enough petrol to return.
Obviously the only way to reach this enchanting place is with a rental vehicle which can be a scooter or a car (much better the second option), because there are no public services that go up to here. The usual alternative can be a taxi but beware of the costs that can be high especially if you are staying on the opposite side of the island.
What to say more ‘, in this case only a visit will actually give you the idea of the wild and still original wonder of Korakonisi, one more reason’ to put it on the list of things to see in Zakynthos.
We await your impressions.
