Let’s start by saying that Firopotamos in addition to being a splendid beach, also gives its name to the small and picturesque village that hosts it. We find them both in the north-eastern part of the Milos Island about a couple of kilometers from Plaka the capital.
The village is built right on the top of a promontory overlooking a beautiful bay where the coast is located. The classic village that can be seen in the north of the island, which developed along a narrow strip between land and sea. Only a few houses with the syrmata characteristics are the boathouses with their doors of different colors where on the ground floor there is the garage for boats and on the second floor instead the real houses once used by fishermen to rest between a joke fishing and the other.
The houses in Firopotamos in the present day have been transformed into summer residences for people who lived in the winter in Athens while some are rented to tourists during the summer period.
Given its location, the Firopotamos village is protected from the north winds, making it the ideal place to spend a pleasant day at the beach. A small pearl, where you will find only a small church to visit if open and a small café open only in summer. Also interesting is an ancient building that in the past was a factory where kaolin was worked and transported, a mineral present in Milos used mainly for the production of ceramics and porcelain.
But the main attraction of Firopotamos is certainly its beach. A sort of natural swimming pool with a beach of soft light-colored sand, right in the middle of steep cliffs, surrounded by tamarisk trees that in the hottest hours are a real treasure to shelter from the hot sun rays, with clean waters , clear and blue in color that makes the place almost tropical. The seabed is shallow and therefore perfect for families with children and for lovers of long swims.
For snorkelers, Firopotamos beach will be a pleasant surprise thanks to its fish flora and fauna around the rocks that surround it. It is much loved by young people who usually meet here to pass the time.
Following a path just before arriving in Firopotamos passing through a small valley on the side, you can have a breathtaking view over the whole bay.
It is equipped for the most part with sun beds and umbrellas, while for something to drink and eat there is a small bar that offers the service only in the summer season. It is very popular in fact during the high season it is a bit crowded, but if you want to enjoy it in peace just come early in the morning.
It is very simple, you can follow several asphalted roads that develop on the island, just head north-east and keep Plaka as a reference point.
A visit even just for a coffee is a must, so remember to write it down among the things to see in Milos!
