Cape Amarandos is located in the south of the Skopelos island aboutnine kilometers from the Skopelos capital Town between theStafilos beach and the Velanio beach just before the characteristic Agnontas port, a small village where you can eat the freshest fish ofthe island seen that fishermen prefer this natural shelter to moortheir boats after going out to sea to fish for squid, lobster andprawns.
Agnontas derives from the Olympic runner Agnontas or Agnon who, whenhe returned victorious in 596 BC from Olympia, the area was dedicatedto him, taking his name. Also in modern times, Agnontas beach owesits popularity to the well known movie “Mamma Mia” where severalscenes were filmed. Another name is Tumblewweds, an ancient Incasacred plant that grows in the area and never withers.
Awonderful inlet with a small rocky promontory where two curved pinetrees seem to want to embrace the sea from above the rock. The watershere are of an intense blue, even more amplified by the white of therocks and the verdant vegetation that surrounds the area, giving itan almost exotic flavour. The Skopelos inhabitants call itAramandos which means pool precisely because of its blue and almostalways flat waters. Once there were three pine trees, oneunfortunately fell due to a strong wind and in 2016 some unfortunatepeople set fire to the whole area for not being careful during apicnic, burning the entire forest behind. Luckily nature continues totake its course and everything is slowly being reforested.
Sincethere is no beach, people usually come to Cape Amarandos for divingthanks to its exciting seabed of rocks sculpted by the sea and forfishing. On the high south of the promontory a spectacular wall thatreaches a height of thirty meters. If you are not expert swimmers itwould be better to avoid it, simply enjoy the wonderful panorama andwhat our mother earth has been able to give us.
