In addition to the Akrotiri excavations, another important and interesting archaeological site to visit are the Ancient Thira ruins .
Between the Kamari and Perissa beaches in the eastern part of the Santorini island, above the Kameni summit at about 396 meters above sea level on the Mesa Vouna promontory, are the remains of this large city, eight hundred meters long and 150 centimeters wide. You can reach on foot for walkers with a walk of about an hour that will give you a beautiful view.
Founded in the 9th century BC by the Dori and then by the Hellenistic period by the Romans and the Byzantines, one can see various finds including the Terrace of the Festivals where in honor of the god Apollo parties were organized by singing and celebrating in joy. Continuing along the main road crossed by smaller streets you come to two Agorà (piazza in Greco), where there are the Dionysus temples and the Apollo Karneios Sanctuary, traces of the Roman Baths, the Artemidorus Sanctuary carved into the rock, the Byzantine walls and the Agios Stefanos church.
The site is free and is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 8.30 to 14.30. A recommendation, do not go among the caves carved into the rock is dangerous.
