Agios Stefanos Beach Kos

Here is a beach that will captivate you, Agios Stefanos Beach. We find it in the southwestern part of the island of Kos about forty kilometers from the capital Kos Town and just three kilometers from the picturesque Kefalos village.

A small cove of soft sand, bathed by a sea that is more 'crystalline', with very shallow waters for a long stretch where the children, even the baby, can have fun in absolute safety since mostly the waters are almost always flat. Equipped with a few sunbeds and umbrellas at a cost of about € 8 per day, it is one of the most sought-after beaches on the island, everyone wants to stay there at least one day and in the high season the motto is as always that whoever arrives first is better seated.

The particularities of Agios Stefanos beach are given by the scenic Kastri islet in the middle of the sea right in front of the coast easily reachable by swimming where locals and non-locals love to celebrate their wedding in the small white and blue church that dominates like a sentinel this tiny piece of land emerged and where the legend says that if you ring the chapel bell three times and make a wish, the chances of it coming true are very high.

Second and not least attraction of Agios Stefanos beach are the ruins of the early Christian basilica of Saint Etienne on the small rocky promontory on the right. In reality, they were once two twin basilicas from the 5th and 6th centuries AD which before a terrible earthquake were connected with the islet of Kastri by a bridge. The largest church had three naves with two rows of columns and a semicircular vault. The floors were of beautiful mosaics depicting birds that can still be seen today. The smaller one in the north was also with three naves but of reduced dimensions and with a marble throne still preserved and visible. The site came to light in 1932 thanks to the Italian archaeologist Luciano Lorenzi who gave the world an important testimony of the amazing works of the past.

Behind Agios Stefanos beach, a small kiosk (in Greek they are called Kantina, practically a caravan used as a kiosk) where you can find something fresh to drink and something quick to eat.

Instead, if you want a more substantial meal, you just need to walk on the water's edge or for the lazy ones take the car and head south where you meet the Kamari bay with its restaurants and typical tavernas on the sea, some grocery shops, bars and cafes to sit, contemplate the magical Aegean Sea and relax. If, on the other hand, you want something original, just go up to the old village of Kefalos and look for the inn by Niotis, a nice lady who shares the dishes prepared for her family with those who want to taste the local specialties at zero kilometers since both the vegetables and the meat are produced by the husband.

How to get to Agios Stefanos Beach

You have to reach the southern part of Kos, following and crossing the whole island (it always depends on where you have decided to stay), and just before the Kamari bay take a dirt road on the left that will take you directly to the beach, or a ' alternative is to get to the bay and then reach it on foot. Here, too, you can move as you prefer, or with a rental vehicle that is a car or scooter, or by public transport that from the main tourist resorts arrives as far as Kefalos, but always pay attention to the timetables to be able to go back.

A beach to be included absolutely among the things to see in Kos, it will be a fantastic day especially for your children who will be exhausted and fall into the arms of Morpheus in the evening in no time after exhausting all energy to play and have fun.
