Afandou village is located about five kilometers from the flashy Faliraki town and about twenty from the capital Rhodes Town.
Afandou is considered to be one of the oldest urban centers on the Rhodes island and has a long history that begins three thousand years ago. Until the tenth century, it was the most peaceful place on the island, nestled in a magnificent context of fruit trees and olive trees where fishing was the most important resource for both the community and for commercial exchanges.
Unfortunately however much benevolence, it was discovered by the terrible pirates who sailed between the Mediterranean Sea and the Aegean Sea thus beginning to attack and raid the village. The inhabitants therefore to avoid losing all their properties gained with a lot of sweat, decided to move the village beyond the mountains in the hollow of three hills in an invisible point from the coast and that’s why the name Afandou which in Greek means “hidden”.
To date, its stable population is around 7500 people and it has become a real tourist resort where nothing is missing. A jewel with bars, cafes, shops, typical taverns and restaurants, entertainment and history, hotels and guest houses and everything necessary for a peaceful and comfortable holiday. It also houses one of the longest beaches (about 4 kilometers) on the Rhodes island. At the end of Afandou beach, there is another beautiful coastline which includes Traganou beach where there are caves to explore on the left. Another attraction of Afandou is the market exhibition of hand woven rugs that the inhabitants say are magical. (we don’t have the certainty but try it to believe it). Finally, do not miss the opportunity to taste the famous Pitaroudia chickpea balls in Greek, they seem to be the best in Rhodes.
In the village in the center, there is a building dating back to the past and it is the Our Lady Katholiki church dedicated to the Virgin Mary with 17th century frescoes. The history of this chapel is turbulent as it was demolished for the first time by an earthquake in the 6th century, rebuilt by the inhabitants and destroyed a second time by pirates, thus becoming the symbol of Afandou resistance today. To date it is open to the public and on August 15th a big party is not to be missed if you are on holiday in Greece on the Rhodes island.
On the beautiful Afandou beach, there is also one of the most famous 18 hole golf courses in Greece designed by the architect Donald Harride who has given numerous centers for lovers of this sport throughout Europe.
About seven kilometers from Afandou for walkers (but you can also reach it by car if you want), the Seven Springs, the enchanting the Seven Springs forest where there is a small lake fed by the seven small streams. To the south from Afandou instead the beautiful Tsambika beach with its monastery from which the view is breathtaking and very suggestive.
Nothing could be simpler, just follow the road signs.
Certainly a very interesting area that gives the possibility to combine other excursions in order to get to know the area better, therefore, to be absolutely included in the things to see in Rhodes.
