As described in the article on how to get around Kos, the island, being just 65 kilometers long and 15 kilometers wide, can meet all your needs.
The most convenient way to explore the island is by car. With a small vehicle, you can go anywhere and reach every corner of the island. Keep in mind, however, that even if the insurance is comprehensive, it does not cover driving on dirt roads. Additionally, if you commit infractions prohibited by the highway code, such as making a U-turn, some rental companies may apply a penalty, which is usually a maximum of €700.
Some rental companies require a minimum age of 21 and at least two years of driving experience to rent a car.
The rental companies we collaborate with offer the following conditions and guarantees:
A scooter can be a valid alternative to a car, as long as you have the appropriate license (AM, A, A1, or A2). In Greece, unlike in Italy, having a category B license does not allow you to ride up to 125cc scooters. Therefore, once you’ve confirmed that you have the necessary licenses, you can choose from a variety of scooter models and engine capacities. Some rental companies charge a daily fee for comprehensive insurance, but rentals generally include third-party insurance, helmets, and roadside assistance. The same rules apply as for cars—comprehensive insurance does not cover driving on dirt roads, and some rental companies apply a penalty of up to €700 for infractions like making a U-turn.
If you don’t have the licenses for a scooter but still want to feel the wind in your hair, you can opt for a quad or a fun buggy. To rent a quad, you must be at least 21 years old and have some experience with the vehicle, as the limited steering can make it dangerous.
For those who are more athletic and eco-conscious, there are traditional bicycles, mountain bikes, and the new electric bikes. Electric scooters are also becoming more popular, but be careful, as you can still get injured using them.
Some rental companies don’t strictly follow the laws, and you may find someone willing to rent you a scooter without a license. However, be aware that if you are stopped by the police, you will face fines, as ignorance of the law is no excuse, even in Greece.
