Mamma Mia – the movie

Without a doubt the cult film Mamma Mia, represents par excellence the impulse for a wonderful trip to Greece.

Who hasn’t seen it and hasn’t fallen in love with the extraordinary landscapes that make you want to drop everything and move permanently? We did but not where the film was shot on another island but that’s another story.

Mamma Mia was inspired by a theatrical show and tells the funny story of Donna played by the divine Maryl Streep who with her daughter Sophie live on this beautiful island called Kalokairi (in Greek it means summer) and when Sophie decides to get married she wants to find out who her father is by inviting three men from her past without Donna’s knowledge thus creating a series of chaos and funny situations.

But what made this movie so special? Is it perhaps the music of the legendary Abba that accompanies the whole story, or the energy and the invitation to a carefree life or the backgrounds that make you dream of Greece? I don’t think there is an answer, only one thing is certain, the postcard views and places have intrigued millions of people who have decided to discover where the island of Kalokairi is.

We don’t want to disappoint you from the start but know that this island does not exist! In reality the filming was done in Greece but in different areas between the island of Skiathos, the island of Skopelos and the Pelion Region.

In Skopelos they undoubtedly made the memorable shots of the film that convinced the world to come and visit it. Three were filmed at the wonderful Kastani beach, a paradise of soft white sand bathed by transparent waters with a sea of many shades of blue, a sort of natural pool surrounded by rich vegetation that reaches almost to the shore. One scene is when Sophie and her charming groom Sky perform the song “Lay all your love on me”, another when Donna’s lively friend Tanya makes fun of a young Greek Adonis who is courting her and finally when Sophie and Sky leave the island with the notes of “I have a dream”.

The wedding scenes that made thousands of women dream were filmed at the beautiful Chapel of Agios Ioannis sto Kastri (this is its correct Greek name). You can find it northwest of the capital on top of an imposing rock that magically emerges from the sea, connected to its small beach by a rock walkway. To get to the top you have to climb two hundred steps but the effort will undoubtedly be rewarded by the majestic view of Skopelos, the Aegean and on particularly clear days even the nearby island of Alonissos. There is a beautiful legend around Agios Ioannis about a villager who suddenly saw a light on the top of the cliff for several nights and in a dream a woman appeared to him who revealed the presence of a sacred icon right where the glow was. Together with the villagers, they began to dig steps until they reached the top where they found the icon of Saint John (Agios Ioannis). They took it to a small chapel nearby, but the next day it disappeared to appear where it was first found. They then understood that it was the right place and built the small chapel that you can admire today.

In Skiathos instead the filming was done at the old port of the city and tells of when the three fathers meet Sophie for the first time. Finally, another key scene is Donna’s dance on the pier together with her friends that ends with a fun jump into the sea, it was filmed in Damouchari in the Pelion Peninsula where most of the inhabitants participated as extras.

So if you haven’t seen it yet, hurry up and watch the two carefree hours you’ll spend in the company of this fun comedy and its memorable Abba music, but above all to see what you’d be missing if you didn’t choose Greece as your 2024 vacation destination along with the wonderful Greek islands (link site).
