Voulisma Beach Crete

You have most likely seen the Voulisma beach an infinite number of times perhaps not knowing it was her as it is one of the most photographed and reproduced places as a postcard in memory of a holiday in Crete.

We find it in the south-eastern part of the island in the beautiful region of Lassithi about twelve kilometers from the picturesque and characteristic Agios Nikoloas village. Wedged in the wonderful Mirabello Bay, we can say that it is the “city” beach of the Istron village, an area that still retains its ancient atmosphere where you can spend relaxing holidays in the midst of a nature that has not yet been disfigured by modernity. Istron offers other small jewels such as Volismeni beach west of Voulisma beach well protected from the winds and completely wild.

Voulisma beach has an almost exotic flavor thanks to the sea that bathes it in an intense turquoise color that in contrast with the beach made of light sand is very reminiscent of the tropics. Behind it a high rocky cliff covered with Mediterranean scrub gives it that unique touch and the right reputation it has so far deserved. Seven hundred centers long, for the most part it is well equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas, while if you want something to eat or drink at the top of the promontory a snack bar that can be reached by a long staircase but once at the top the view is to be left without breath.

If on the other hand, you want to comfortably put your legs under the table, just take a walk of about five hundred meters and you will arrive at the village of Istron where you can enjoy a rich meal based on fresh products and local recipes, to try absolutely!

The waters of the Voulisma beach are clean and transparent with a gently sloping seabed so perfect for the little ones who can play in total safety. For lovers of long swims the whole bay is definitely ideal, while for snorkelers the seabed of Voulisma beach is a real playground given the wealth of marine fauna and flora to be discovered.

The only drawback is the wind. Unfortunately her position does not protect her very well when the Greek winds decide to make themselves heard, but as always Mother Nature puts a remedy, giving a small bay to the west where you can stay calm.

Voulisma beach is very popular with both visitors and locals and therefore especially on weekends it fills with people looking for the best corner to enjoy a healthy day by the sea. If you want to admire the pure beauty of the beach, we advise you to get there early in the morning when everyone is still in the arms of Morpheus, it will be a memory that you will hardly forget.

Another name by which it is called is Golden Beach for the color of the sand that at particular times of the day and based on light seems to shine like gold. Given the clarity of the water almost every year it is awarded the deserved Blue Flag.

And as in almost the whole Crete Island, traces of ancient times have also been found in this area and for this reason, the whole area has not undergone overwhelming urbanization thanks to the limitations imposed by Cultural Heritage.

How to reach Voulisma Beach

Wherever you have decided to spend your holidays in Crete, the direction is north-east, perhaps taking the village of Aghios Nikolaos as a reference. From here follow the signs for Istron and you will be at your destination. Among other things, the beach also offers a large parking lot where you can leave your vehicle.

Just to give you the timing from Heraklion it is an hour away by car.If you have chosen Istron as your base, with a simple and pleasant walk you will already have your feet in the water, for those who have decided not to rent a vehicle always from Heraklion rather than from other tourist destinations there are bus rides but as always remember to consult the timetables and routes.

Certainly the Voulisma beach is one of the most ‘fruity and sought after’ but even just for a swim it is worth reaching it and putting it among the things to see in Crete.

If you are there, what is the best time to enjoy so much beauty, according to our point of view it is definitely the beginning of June, or September or October when the temperatures are not hot and everything is much easier from finding a place on the beach, to where go to eat or where to stay.
