There is a Greece that doesn’t need the sea to leave you speechless. A Greece made of towering mountains, dizzying canyons, stone villages, silent forests and rivers with water so crystal-clear it almost seems unreal.

Kleidonia is particularly famous for its magnificent stone bridge over the Voidomatis.

Continuing towards Konitsa, you reach another of the most fascinating areas of northern Epirus, close to where the Voidomatis meets the Aoos River.

To truly explore this area, having a car is highly recommended.
The villages are scattered across a vast mountainous region, and public transport does not offer the same freedom to move around.
Above all, travelling with your own vehicle allows you to stop whenever you want.

An unexpected bridge, a viewpoint, a small taverna, a village you had never planned to visit: in Zagori, it is often these unplanned detours that become the most memorable moments of the journey.
To truly understand the Voidomatis, you need to look beyond its waters.
The territory crossed by the river has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and caves throughout the region have revealed evidence of an extremely ancient human presence.
This part of Epirus was, in fact, a natural corridor between the Pindus Mountains and the western regions.
In ancient times, the territory belonged to the world of the Epirotes, while not far from here stood Dodona, one of the oldest and most important oracles of the ancient Greek world.
Centuries later, the mountains once again shaped the destiny of the region.
Geographical isolation encouraged the development of the famous villages of Zagori, mountain communities characterised by architecture perfectly adapted to the surrounding environment.

Paradoxically, the very isolation that made life in these mountains difficult for centuries also helped preserve their natural heritage.
Today, travelling along the roads of Zagori therefore means crossing not only one of the most beautiful regions of mainland Greece, but also a landscape where nature and history remain deeply intertwined.
