The picturesque district of Vaporia is located in Ermoupoli around the port. It is an aristocratic-looking neighborhood where during the revolutions the Greek refugees settled and built houses of neoclassical style unique in their genre.
The name Vaporia derives from the fact that the houses overlooking the sea have high ceilings with fascinating paintings, marble balconies, wooden doors and floors that seem almost like boats (in Greek vaporia) ready to take the sea from the rocks. It was the island’s commercial district in the 19th century where all commercial affairs were handled and where ships departed with products to be exported.
The area is very beautiful and particular with small beaches where to have a swim, mysterious alleys and cafes to relax or eat. Nearby is also the majestic and beautiful Church of San Nicola with its large blue dome, one of the first things to be noticed arriving by sea to the of Syros island.
To date most of the buildings and mansions have been renovated while maintaining the style and some have been transformed into structures where they will reside if you decide to spend your holidays in Greece at Syros.
