The Roman House Kos

Through Odos Grigoroiu Street, we find the Roman House, the most important Roman building of Kos  that came to light after the 1933 earthquake. Between 1938 and 1940 it was restored and rebuilt, maintaining the original structure by the archaeologist Luciano Laurenzi.

A veritable Domus dating back to the 3rd century AD, a large patrician house like those of Pompei, owned by a wealthy Roman citizen of Hellenistic and Roman architecture. Built on the ruins of another house from the Hellenistic period, the rooms of the villa are around three internal courtyards decorated with frescoes including the most famous one depicting a panther attacking a bear.

It was composed of 36 rooms almost all decorated with refined mosaics and frescoes and with 3 atriums to give light and air to the surrounding rooms. In each atrium a small fountain in the middle is, tanks of different sizes always with around mosaics depicting mythological subjects.

Inside the villa there are statues of nymphs, of the Goddess Athena and a mosaic depicting the ocean floor.

The Domus also has a cistern for water storage, decorated with a beautiful mosaic representing a panther tearing a deer. The floors represent the love of nature and among these we find some depicting the depth of the sea, dolphins, tigers and panthers; very beautiful one that represents a fairy above a hippopotamus.

In words it is always very difficult to explain the magnificence of these places, go and visit them if you are in Kos, it will be a wonderful experience.

The times for visiting the site are from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm every day except Monday. Price € 4, free under 18 and 50% discount for over 65s.
