The Saint George Cathedral, is located in the upper part of the Ano Syros village just above Emoupoli located to the left of the city, founded by the Venetians and a typical Cycladic postcard village with white square houses, built like an amphitheater to defend itself from attacks.

The Cathedral was built on the top of the hill around 1200 and is considered the largest Catholic church in Greece. In 1617 the Turks destroyed the Baroque style and was rebuilt several times. The aspect that it currently has dates back to 1834. The icon of St. George and the icon of the Mother of God “Panagias tis Elpidas” (the Madonna of Hope) of artistic and cultural value are preserved in the church.

It is worthwhile if you are fond of walking to reach it from Ermoupoli, it is about 3 and a half kilometers, but so you will pass through the narrow streets of the capital up to the top of the hill where you will also enjoy a very beautiful panoramic view.
