The Skala village is located in the southernmost part on the eastern side of the beautiful Kefalonia island about forty kilometers from the capital Argostoli.
In the wildest part, Skala is certainly the ideal place for those who want a quiet holiday without too much noise, in short, where nothing is missing but peace and relaxation reign. Indeed it is much loved by mature people, here 'fleets of kids who want the nightlife 24 hours a day you will not find any.
Skala village was once a small fishing village, but in recent decades it has had a dizzying expansion as it is highly appreciated for its natural context with the consequence of a strong urbanization of accommodation facilities ranging from hotels to apartments or landlords. During the year it has about 5000 inhabitants who multiply during the summer period. Skala has everything the tourist is looking for, from cute cafes, typical taverns, restaurants, shops, and a very soft nightlife.
The classic seaside resort with a central street in the heart of the settlement and a beautiful sandy beach about four kilometers long bathed by a clear blue sea.
Completely rebuilt after the terrible earthquake of 1953, today it still retains something about the past as a beautiful Roman villa from the third century where you can admire magnificent mosaics and, about two kilometers away, the remains of an ancient temple dedicated to the cult of the God Apollo.
One of the reasons why the village of Skala is famous is due to the fact that its beautiful beach is one of the favorite places for the nesting of Caretta-Caretta turtles because, the temperature, the humidity of the soil and the size of the sand are characteristic essential for egg growth and hatching. Did you know that the temperature of the sand determines the sex of small turtles? The period in which the mothers arrive on the beach runs from June to August and after about 60 days the first little ones peep out and go straight to the sea.
The beach is certainly one of the reasons that drives many people to decide to spend their holidays in Greece on Kefalonia Island in this magnificent place. With a centuries-old fairy pine forest behind it that gives shade and coolness in the hottest hours, it has a sea of enchanting colors that go from turquoise to emerald green with gently sloping backdrops perfect for those who love swimming and for families with children. Its position protects it from the winds making it ideal for a day of complete relaxation. Part of it is equipped with a beach bar, sun loungers, umbrellas and taverns where you can taste traditional local and Greek dishes. The rest of the larger part, on the other hand, is completely free and extremely wild, so if you decide to spend the day here unless you get to just after the served part, remember to bring everything you need. Being very close to the village you can reach it either with your own vehicle and then leave it in the parking lot or if you love walking along the promenade maybe at sunset.
It is very simple, wherever you are staying, always go south-east and at the end following the signs you will find the village.
Definitely to be noted among the things to see in Kefalonia, just for the beach it is worth it and then maybe if you are right in the period of the birth of the turtles you can witness one of the fantastic miracles of Nature.
