At the entrance to the castle, a square opens up where the Hippocratices Plane Tree (460-370 BC) is located, a tree of historical importance.
The tradition wants to attribute to him the age of 2500 years under which it is said that Hippocrates the father of medicine taught his followers the secrets of the art of healing.
It has a diameter of about twelve meters and, being a very old tree, it is surrounded by a massive and complex metal structure to prevent it from collapsing and preserving it from those who, by way of memory, removed the leaves and in the worst case, removed a piece of bark as a souvenir.
Next to the plane tree up until two years ago there was a sarcophagus of the Hellenistic period adapted to provide water to the nearby loggia on which there was an Arabic epigraph with the year of foundation of the mosque of Gazi ‘Hsan Pascià right in front. Unfortunately, with the 2017 earthquake this splendid work of art has been almost completely destroyed.
A stroll perhaps combining it with the visit to the castle or to the archaeological finds right behind the square, you have to do it.
