Papafragas Beach Milos

The scenic and strange Papafragas Beach, we find it in the north east of the beautiful Milos Island, about five minutes by car from Pollonia and fifteen from Adamas. Kapros beach just after.

The whole island is very particular, it has an almost lunar aspect where white is the dominant color. Papafragas beach is a special, secluded beach, difficult to reach but absolutely to be put among the things to see in Milos, it would be a great shame to miss it.

In reality, there is very little coastline, it is a small strip of sand where at most there are about twenty people. The peculiarity of Papafragas are the caves carved in the volcanic cliff that have created three small channels forming natural arches. Being so small, if you want to enjoy it better it would be to go early in the morning or late afternoon.

Two of the canals reach the tiny beach and an impervious path with a narrow and difficult staircase carved out of the white rocks leads to the sea. Brilliant blue waters, crystalline and iridescent based on sunlight and atmospheric conditions, yes, because you must always take into account the wind above all because if it is not there, you can spend a magnificent day, having fun above all to explore the caves that therefore do not forget mask, fins, snorkel and an underwater camera, while for the lazy ones I stay to bask in the sun and indulge in relaxing swims. On the contrary, if Aeolus is particularly agitated, the Papafragas beach becomes dangerous, due to the currents that could make you hit the rocks or worse still hurt you with the sharp rocks. In this regard, we invite you to consult the weather conditions the day before so as not to make an empty trip or worse still ecstatic by the place, challenge good luck, hurting you and thus ruining your holiday.

Obviously the small Papafragas beach is not equipped, in this magical place only wild nature, intact and with no intention of bowing to man. Bring everything you need, from water, food, sunscreen, a hat and above all, wear closed shoes if you decide to take the rocky staircase.

For the less adventurous, however, the Papafragas beach offers an idyllic panorama from above, perfect for a memorable souvenir photo. The scenery of the natural pool and the large cave carved into the side of the cliff are truly postcard-worthy.

Not far from Papafragas beach is the oldest archaeological site of Milos, the ancient city of Phylakope dating back to the Neolithic period that offers some remains of walls, tombs and buildings as most of the poles are now covered by the sea.

Fun fact: several centuries ago during the pirate period, this secret beach was a base where sea thieves hid their treasures and sheltered from retaliation by the law.

How to reach Papafragas Beach

You can choose whether to do everything independently with a car rather than a scooter by taking a northbound and following the signs for Pollonia and diverting to the signs indicating the beach. At the beginning of the path that then leads to the natural stairs, there is a free parking lot where you can leave your vehicle.

The second option is by sea. Daily excursions are organized by the agencies on the island that will take you close to the beach thus avoiding having to bring everything you need for a day at the beach and not doing the terrible descents and climbs from the path. But let’s say that you would miss the view from above but it is easily recoverable, just go there another day.

Papafragas beach is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Milos and therefore a must during your holiday in Greece.
