Myrthos Beach Crete

The Myrthos Beach, we find it in the southeastern part of the beautiful Crete Island, about fifteen kilometers from the town of Ierapetra, a charming tourist resort in the southern part.

In a wide valley covered with fragrant citrus trees and greenhouses crossed by the Kyros river that flows into the majestic Sarakina gorge, Myrthos beach is wedged in an open bay with low mountains covered with Mediterranean scrub on one side. A long coastline considered one of the most beautiful in the southern part of Crete made of coarse gray sand of the one that fortunately does not stick when wet, with clean and crystalline waters, a sea with shades that go from blue to turquoise and a seabed that slowly descends, which is why it is much loved by families with children and by those who love to indulge in long swims.

The beach is well equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas, lifeguards who supervise the safety of bathers, showers, changing rooms, bars for something cool to drink, restaurants and typical taverns where you can taste the unique and inimitable Cretan delicacies or dishes of classic Greek cuisine. For sports enthusiasts, many water activities to do together with the family or with old or new friends. Beach volleyball courts to spend a day on the move. Given its favorable position, Myrthos beach is never subject to winds and offers magnificent days at sea.

The homonymous village behind which has about five hundred inhabitants added to the other four small villages in the vicinity, are involved in tourism, fishing and agriculture so that you can find many greenhouses in the area that produce fresh vegetables. The town of Myrthos is a small fishing village that in recent decades has developed due to the continuous tourist demand but which despite everything has managed to preserve its traditional style. If you decide to stay here for your holiday in Crete you will have the opportunity to find a decent choice of accommodation ranging from simple apartments, to small hotels to some modern resorts.

Myrthos is the perfect part of Crete if you want a holiday full of nature and total relaxation, here no crazy nights or frenzy, just beautiful sea, some Kafenio where you can make friends with the locals where they usually find themselves to get lost in endless chats or games of backgammon and if you’re lucky, hear amazing stories about lore and legend. Also take a moment to stroll through its whitewashed streets every year before Easter and delight your sense of smell with the colorful and fragrant flowers of the pretty gardens. A real postcard picture landscape, this is what you will find in Myrthos.

A break from the warm rays of the sun can be a visit to the church of Agios Antonios and also the Myrthos Museum which preserves archaeological finds from the Minoan period and popular instruments that clearly show how people once lived in this distant region. Or if you like walking you can take a path that starts near the river to reach the Minoan-era settlement of Pirgos which climbs up a hill where the ruins of pre-Hellenic houses are located.

Another alternative can be a visit to the mountain villages of South Diki,  Pefkos village or Simi village which are located in one of the last forests of the island while if you are more sea lovers, go and see Ierapetra. and maybe take a trip to the Chrissi Island also called Gaidouronisi (chrissi in Greek means gold, gaidorunissi from donkeys) with its centuries-old junipers shaped by the wind and the saltiness with its pink beaches with a tropical flavor.

Finally, if you are fond of archeology, near Myrthos, there are two important sites: Fournou and Korifi considered the oldest in Crete dated 2800-2200 BC.
