Meze is the abbreviation of Mezedes, or “small delicacies” and are usually consumed as an appetizer or as an aperitif.
Given the portions and how many we say that with the meze you eat great and we suggest you try them all wherever you go for your holidays in Greece.
In Cyprus obviously could not miss this tradition and given the abundance of fresh fish, vegetables, meat, local aromatic herbs and an excellent olive oil, here you can have the fifth essence of the Mediterranean and being Cyprus then very close to the Middle East, in the kitchen there is a strong influence and believe me what comes out is fantastic.
You will find meze for all tastes like juicy autochthonous olives, sauces like tzatziki or hummus (here very different from Greek hummus), fried or boiled fish, souvlaki, marinated or battered vegetables, fried chickpea or meatballs the list is really long and I don’t want to make you lose the pleasure of discovery.
Usually the best meze can be tasted in the typical taverns where the atmosphere is always very homely and cheerful, perhaps even with live music improvised by the character in turn.
