Mandrakia beach together with its picturesque fishing village, we find it in the north east part of Milos Island. Firopotamos beach is just above four kilometers to the north, while Sarakiniko beach, perhaps the most photographed and emblem of the island, is still four kilometers to the south.
In reality in Mandrakia there is no real beach, let’s say that it is more a small strip of pebbles and stone near the port that sometimes it is difficult to recognize that it is a beach but it is the whole context that makes this part Milos beautiful and waiting to be discovered.
The village is the real pearl! Few houses around this rocky inlet where the Syrmata are the “garages” if we want to catalog them nicely dug into the soft volcanic rock where fishermen once put their boats during the winter to protect them from the rushing sea and salt, with their colored doors each with a different color to identify their ownership.
Here everything seems to have stopped, time passes slowly and with an almost disarming serenity, a few simple things that give an atmosphere where anyone would like to live forever. A tavern by the sea where you can enjoy excellent fresh fish and where the octopuses are still hung to dry as if they were laundry to dry, here’s what to expect from Mandrakia, quiet and true seafaring spirit. Obviously there is the small church that as in all Greek villages can not be present, while above the hill the church of Zoodohos Pigi.
However, if you want to indulge in an internal day of idleness and under the warm Hellenic sun, hidden from prying eyes among jagged rocks and where very few people get there and above all know, there is the Tourkothalassa Beach (in Greek sea of the Turks) with a small shoreline of sand mixed with pebbles, clear, transparent waters and an electric blue and turquoise sea that invites you more than ever to take a bath or a nice regenerating swim. Also in this case only wild nature there is no shadow of modernization, everything is in its natural state so ‘if you decide to stop for a while, stock up on water, something to eat and shelter from the sun unless you want to take a stroll and reach Mandrakia which is still in the immediate vicinity. Tourkothalassa beach can only be reached on foot.
Direction north east, from the main road follow the road signs and in no time you will be at your destination.
It takes a rental vehicle, rides with public buses little or nothing.
Often underestimated compared to the more famous villages such as Klima, Mandrakia still has a charm all its own and certainly not less from similar villages, the waves that break the rocks, the colors, the scents and the genuineness of this place will make you sure fall in love and want to come back again and again.
Do not make the mistake of not putting it in your travel itinerary of things to do in Milos, it will be a pleasant surprise as well as an excellent opportunity to see more of the island and why not combine business with pleasure perhaps combining the two other noble beaches in the northern part.
