Karpathos Island

Karpathos, also known as Scarpanto in Italian, is located in the Dodecanese Archipelago, nestled in the Aegean Sea between  Rhodes and Crete islands.

It is the third largest island in the archipelago and can truly be considered a gem. Once relatively hidden, it has now become a popular tourist destination, especially among Italians. Despite the influx of visitors, particularly during the summer, Karpathos has managed to retain its typical Greek atmosphere and traditional customs that date back centuries.

With a long and narrow shape covering around 324 square kilometers, the island is primarily mountainous, with peaks running from north to south, reaching heights of up to 1,200 meters, such as Mount Kali Limni and Mount Lastos. These mountains offer stunning views, suspended between the sky and the deep blue sea. Like many other Greek islands, Karpathos has two smaller neighboring islands: the uninhabited and wild Saria to the north, and Kasos to the south, where you might consider staying for a few days. The island’s rugged terrain creates a diverse environment where nature has carved out dramatic cliffs, streams, and promontories that support a rich variety of flora and fauna, along with beaches where you can unwind and recharge. A word of caution: Karpathos is often windy, so if you’re not a fan of strong breezes, it might take some getting used to.

History of Karpathos

According to mythology, Karpathos was the home of the Titan king Leptsos, son of Gaia and Uranus. Legend has it that Athena was born here from the head of Zeus. Inhabited since the Neolithic period, the island saw the arrival of settlers from Crete during the Minoan era, who stayed until the end of the Bronze Age. Karpathos also took part in the Trojan War before being conquered by the Dorians. During the Classical period, the island reached a high level of civilization due to its proximity to the port of Lindos. In the Hellenistic era, Karpathos had close ties with Rhodes, which influenced its history. Under Roman rule, the island was well protected because it served as a stopover along the maritime routes between Rome and the cities of the eastern Mediterranean.

During the Byzantine era, Karpathos suffered numerous pirate attacks, forcing the population to move inland for protection. The Genoese arrived next, staying for two centuries, followed by the Venetians, until the island fell under Ottoman rule in 1912. It was then annexed to Italy, along with other Dodecanese islands. Finally, during World War II, after being freed from the Germans, Karpathos became part of Greece in 1948.

Karpathos is a peaceful and unspoiled island where you can find dreamlike beaches washed by some of the most beautiful waters in the Greek islands, with colors ranging from deep turquoise to emerald green and the typical dark blue of the Aegean.

A visit to the ancient Olympos village in the northwest, the island’s most rugged area, is a must. Built on a mountain ridge to protect against raiders, it is a truly enchanting place. The stone houses blend into the landscape, and traditional clothing, such as headscarves and hand-embroidered blouses, is still worn. The narrow streets exude an authentic atmosphere, steeped in old customs and traditions. The village is often referred to as “the village of women,” as they have always been the majority due to men being away fighting or working.

Diafani, also in the north, is a small village with flat roofed houses and is Karpathos’ second port. Its fish market is legendary, as fishing boats dock here after their trips. From Diafani, you can set off to explore the beautiful Saria island.

In the southern part of the island, don’t miss Amoopi, nestled in a stunning bay with sandy beaches and rocky cliffs, or the capital Pigadia, a lively town offering a mix of modern amenities and traditional charm. You should also visit Aperi, located 320 meters above sea level and once the island’s capital, with its lovely square and small churches. Lastly, Menetes, a village built during the medieval period, offers breathtaking views.

If you love hiking, Karpathos will not disappoint! The area near Diafani, in particular, has trails that lead to remote places full of history and mystery.
