Kalotaritissa Beach Amorgos

Kalotaritissa beach is found in the most extreme southern tip of the Amorgos Island right in front of the Gramvousa islet. The capital Chora is about twenty kilometers away.

Enclosed in a small but beautiful bay, it has a long coastline of soft, light-colored sand bathed by clean and crystalline waters with a sea of colors ranging from blue to turquoise, to emerald to deep blue. Given its position, Kalotaritissa beach always has calm waters as it is protected by the inlet in which it is located. You can find some trees behind the beach that give natural shade during the hottest hours.

It is equipped with sun beds and umbrellas, while for something to drink or eat there is only one characteristic cellar where you can find everything you need if your intention is to spend the whole day there. We advise you to taste the cheese cake, a real delicacy! There are no tourist services, here only wild nature and in its original state.

It is one of the most popular beaches of Amorgos, in fact in the summer it is quite crowded but this should absolutely not discourage you in going to visit it, just choose the best times that are either early in the morning or in the late afternoon. Perfect for snorkelers thanks to the generous marine environment near the rocks, so don’t forget a mask, fins and an underwater camera to immortalize the inhabitants of the seabed that will be a wonderful memory of your holiday in Amorgos.

The small gulf also hosts a small port for local fishing boats as well as a safe anchorage point for sailors.

From Kalotaritissa beach, every day in the high season, every hour boats leave for Gramvousa which can be reached in ten minutes by boat. An uninhabited island with two beautiful sandy beaches and incredibly clean waters where you can enjoy a dream bath.

Less than a kilometer from Kalotaritissa beach, there is the bay of the famous “Shipwreck of Amorgos”, one of the symbols of the island. It was the year 1980 when in February a commercial ship whose original name was Inland later renamed “Olympia”, due to the strong wind (the islanders speak of 10 Beaufort practically a full storm) landed directly on the rocks remaining stranded. Fortunately the crew managed to save themselves by avoiding a huge tragedy. According to rumors, the crew consisted of modern pirates headed for the island of Cyprus.

Let’s also say that Kalotaritissa beach owes its fame to the filming of Luc Besson’s cult film of 1988 “Le Grand Bleu” which contributed massively to give visibility and popularity to Amorgos.

Keep in mind that the area where the beach is located is basically agricultural, there are no large villages but small villages like Kalofana and there are no petrol stations so remember to have enough fuel to go back and forth.

How to reach Kalotaritissa Beach

Let’s say that the best way is with a rental car or scooter, so you can manage your time as you want. Then head southwest following the road signs to the southernmost tip of the island.

During the summer, there are also public buses but always check the timetables. Another valid alternative is to take a taxi (you will be amazed there are very few in Amorgos) that you can perhaps share with other people in order to reduce costs.

Put Kalotaritissa beach among the things to do in Amorgos, so you can discover the wildest and most unspoiled part of the island, perhaps combining it with a visit to the other beaches in the vicinity.
