Crete Island is the largest in the whole Aegean and we can say that it is a real world apart.
A dialect, different cultural and culinary traditions that you can only find here, a riot of history and luxuriant and surprisingly different nature with heterogeneous ecosystems and habitats, mountain villages that look like crib houses, beaches that make anyone pale with a sea of bright colors is what to expect from Crete.
And still expanses of centuries-old olive trees that give the earth the precious yellow gold the oil famous all over the world, coasts with palm trees so much that it seems more like being in Africa than in Greece and mild weather almost all year round. Its proximity to the Libyan and Egyptian coasts have since time immemorial brought influences that are still strongly rooted, thus contaminating customs and traditions. On the other hand, Crete has undergone the predominance of various cultures from the most famous and autochthonous Minoan, to the Turkish, Roman and Venetian cultures whose traces are clearly visible and recognizable throughout the island and has been an important point for trade with neighboring Africa and the Middle East.
Deciding to come on holiday to Crete has its reasons, you choose for the pleasant temperatures, for clean, transparent waters, to satisfy the taste with its cuisine and to spend peaceful days in contact with Nature which has truly given its best here of itself.
Getting to Crete is very simple, there are two options either with a flight or by sea.
By flight: Crete has two airports, Heraklion as the capital of the island in the east and Chania in the west. Both are international. From Italy during the summer there are many routes to Crete from several Italian airports. There are also low-coast airlines which, if you book early, offer really advantageous prices.
If you wish, you can decide to arrive in Athens or Thessaloniki and from there take an internal flight. The companies that operate this route are Olympic Air and Sky Express and both will land in both Chania and Heraklion.
From some Greek islands such as Kos and Rhodes it is also possible to take a direct flight to Crete.
By ship: if you want to bring your car or you fancy a journey with a capital V, the solution by ship is perfect. From Piraeus there are ferries arriving in Heraklion or Souda, Chania, Rethymno, Agio Nikoalos, Sitia and Kissamos, in short, you will be spoiled for choice. Journey time more or less from 7 to 9 hours.
For internal travel there are both ferries and hydrofoils from the Cyclades Islands such as Ios, Santorini, Paros, Naxos, Mykonos and Amorgos, Milos, Kitira while from the Dodecanese archipelago there are from Karpathos, Kos and Rhodes. From the Peloponnese you can embark in Gythion or Kalamata while a leg is also scheduled from Thessaloniki but for these last three routes we are talking about many hours.
