Getting around in Zakynthos

“Never again will I touch the sacred shores where my boyish body lay, my Zakynthos, who mirrors you in the waves of the Greek sea from which Venus was born a virgin, and made those islands fertile with her first smile, from which your clear clouds were not silent and your fronds the inclined towards him who sang the waters fatal, and the different exile for which beautiful of fame and misfortune kissed his stony Ithaca Ulysses. You will have nothing but the song of your son, my motherland; fate prescribed to us the lacrimated burial”

Already with a presentation like this, the desire to take it and go and check if it is actually so is immediately felt. Guaranteed that it is so ‘indeed better!

Beautiful Zakynthos is one of the islands that will steal your heart for many reasons, a sea of crazy colors, endless beaches of soft sand where you can let yourself be pampered by the sun, its legendary Mizithres, the stacks that magically spit out of the sea and close to a another place to visit absolutely in Keri Lighthouse which, given its favorable position, offers breathtaking views and sunsets to melt even the coldest of hearts. And yet the Blue Caves a spectacle of nature where the sea changes color based on the light, giving the waters a particular shade which, mixed with transparency and sharpness, give an almost celestial vision.

We could continue for hours and hours to describe the magnificence of this island, but we think it is better that you discover them with your own eyes to enjoy unique emotions that you will remember for a lifetime.

But let’s get to the main and most important information, how to get around in Zakynthos. Let’s start by saying that the island covers a good 406 square kilometers, is 40 long and 18 wide, offering a good 154 kilometers of coastline and already here it is clear that it is not that small after all.

There are several opportunities to get around, it always depends on how much time you have, your budget and above all your desire to explore. Having taken into account these things, you can decide on which means to orient yourself.

Car: the four wheels as well as being comfortable, are also one of the safest and best means to be able to move from one part of the island to another. Let’s say that the roads are quite tortuous but allow you to reach wonderful places even when it gets dark where you can perhaps stop to eat and taste genuine food made by skilled hands and with ancient recipes. If you come by ferry you can directly bring your own or if you arrive with a flight you can rent it. There are many rent a car on the island and if you book in time you could even get better prices. We recommend that you think about it first for the vehicle because Zakynthos is usually overcrowded during the summer and you risk being left on foot…

Scooter: if you are young or used to the scooter it can be a valid alternative. Here bear in mind that if you take a 50 cc nobody will forbid you to go far and wide but consider that the times lengthen considerably and when you meet a climb ouch ouch ouch it could be a difficult undertaking. Having said that, if you are an inside biker or have a reduced budget, prefer a higher engine capacity, first for a safety issue and second to shorten the times a little and have the opportunity to see as many things as possible.

Quad: in Zakynthos there are few dirt roads so in theory the quad is a somewhat wasted expense but as always the holiday is yours and it is right that you indulge yourself with any whim. Same speech as for the scooter take at least a 250 cc.

Public transport: let’s say that the public network is good. But don’t expect to be able to reach any corner of Zante, especially the beaches. The buses are perfect for getting from some seaside resorts to Zakynthos town, nothing more, for the rest you will have to walk. Here is the site to consult for available rides and destinations.
