Black Beach Santorini

Santorini Island boasts beaches of rare beauty and different colors. Yes, only here you can find the red beach, the white beach and the black beach all one after the other.

We want to tell you about the black beach also called Black Beach, the most secluded and least frequented by visitors. If you have seen our other articles that talk about the beaches of Santorini, you will have noticed that they all have coasts of dark volcanic sand so you are wondering what is different about Black Beach? In reality, in terms of color while the other beaches are on dark gray, here ‘it is jet black and if we talk about the surrounding scenery then we understand even more’ its particularity.

In reality, its original name is Mesa Pigadia and we find it hidden in the southwestern part of Santorini about three kilometers from the Akrotiri village famous for its interesting archaeological site and about one kilometer from the scenic lighthouse (Pharos in Greek).

A hidden gem where even in full season you will not find the classic crowding perhaps because it is little known, or reaching it is a small adventure and still not quite so “comfortable”. Let’s start by saying that it is made up of large black pebbles like coal where it is difficult to walk due to the heat they accumulate especially during the hot and uncomfortable hours to spread out the towel and lie down, luckily it is partly equipped with some sun lounger and umbrella to God if not unless you are a fakir it would really be an undertaking to be able to enjoy such beauty. The sea is amazing, limpid clear and with a classic blue color as the seabed drops strongly therefore not really suitable for children, but rather perfect for swimming lovers. However, we recommend that you bring some rock shoes as even to enter the water there are only and exclusively stones. There are two taverns, Mesa Pigadia the first one you meet, very classic and at reasonable prices, the other the Akro, is located on the left under the more exclusive cliff and with a superior level of service. Transfers are also organized from Akro to visit White Beach and Red Beach if you want to kill three birds with one stone!

So given the characteristics in our opinion of this beautiful beach, it is suitable for couples or groups without children then obviously everyone is free to do what he prefers, we tell you our impressions. Definitely a place where peace reigns supreme and where you can truly switch off your mind and relax only with the beauty of nature. Black Beach is never exposed to winds, far from it even when in other parts the Meltemi lashes also breaking the boxes a lot, here everything is still thanks to the high cliffs with an immaculate white color on both sides that protect it and which in contrast with the black of the beach and the blue of the waters create a suggestive and fantastic landscape. There are also two small caves where from one entering through a stony part, one exits and miraculously finds some sand.

How to get to the Black Beach

The Balck Beach First of all you need to reach the village of Akrotiri, go beyond the village to the west and follow the road signs for the lighthouse along the coastal road on the magnificent Caldera until you reach a crossroads that has two indications, the one with Mesa Pigadia written is the correct one. where to proceed. From here on only a steep dirt road for about a kilometer so be careful if you are with a scooter it would be better to have a quad or a car even if finding parking is a bit of a challenge and you will have arrived.

For those who are not independent, there is a public bus service that leaves from Fira to the Akrotiri Lighthouse three times a day usually at 10.00, 14.00 and 17.30 but as always we invite you to consult the timetables that can vary according to the seasons.

And for those who love walking, consider about 45 minutes of walking from the village of Akrotiri.

As we said above, Balck Beach is close to the Red and the White, so you can if you want an organized excursion, from Perissa or Kamari every day trips are organized, you will have no problem finding them, any tourist agency offers them.

A small pearl not yet besieged by mass tourism, certainly different but with a particular charm and where you can be alone with yourself and with the wonder that Mother Nature has been able to create. Put it on the list of things to do in Santorini, it will be a pleasant discovery!
