The beautiful Fig Tree Beach, we find it in the north-eastern part of the chameleon Cyprus Island in the town of Protaras and was ranked third among the most beautiful beaches in the world in 2019 and this already says a lot.

Where Protaras stands today, in ancient times there was the city-state of Leukolla where the famous naval battle took place in 306 BC in which Demetrios Poliorketes defeated Ptolemy. According to scholars, the ruins of the city above the bay could belong to the place mentioned by Athenus regarding the trireme of Antigonus with which he defeated the generals of Ptolemy. The town was dedicated to Apollo as evidenced by the excavations of 1877 which brought to light a building with a Hellenistic inscription dedicated to the God.

The curious name of Fig Tree Bay owes it to the fig trees that once surrounded the beach, brought according to tradition by the eastern conquerors in the seventeenth century, but unfortunately, due to modernization, very few remain today.

A five hundred meters long coastline of soft golden sand, bathed by crystal clear and clean waters, a sea with a thousand shades of blue and a gently sloping seabed making them perfect for families with children, for those who love to take long swims and for the elderly.

It is for the most part equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars where you can find a fresh and colorful drink or a quick snack to appease the daily languors, a great variety of water sports to do with the whole family or to challenge the old or the new friends, and is also prepared for the disabled who can also enjoy this wonderful corner of the Cyprus Island in safety and tranquility.

The beach from April to October is patrolled by professional lifeguards who guarantee safe bathing, certainly an added value! It should also be noted that for the excellent quality of services and the care of the whole area, it is always awarded the much coveted Blue Flag.

Not far from the shore and reachable also by swimming, a scenic uninhabited islet covered with low local vegetation where you can swim and discover the seabed.

Let’s also say that Big Tree Fig beach includes two natural bays, to the north with soft sand and free of vegetation, to the south instead rocky where you can have fun snorkeling and go in search of fish fauna and flora.

If you fancy a full meal and blissfully stand with your legs under the table, you will be spoiled for choice behind the coast. Many local taverns offering delicious and varied local cuisine, or for something more European restaurants or snack bars with an international menu, and more places to sit down even for a good coffee. You can also take a nice walk on the coastal pedestrian street where there is an ancient tomb from the Hellenistic era visible as part of the street is made of glass. In the evening, the coast comes alive with bars and clubs where you can stay late until the first light of dawn.

For lovers of walking, you can take coastal paths north to Louma beach or south to Lombardi beach.

We can say with certainty that Big Tree Fig beach is a much loved destination by visitors to the island, ideal for anyone, with all the comforts for a wonderful day at sea where you can enjoy the generosity of Mother Nature in a unique and relaxing context . Obviously, being very well known especially during the high season, it is very popular but do not be afraid of space for everyone.
