Armenistis Lighthouse Mykonos

Like a sentinel on the mysterious waters of the Aegean Sea and as evidence of the Mykonos maritime history , we find the Armenistis Lighthouse.

It is located in Agios Stefanos in the north west part of the Mykonos island right in front of the Tinos island.

A place where peace reigns supreme, a trip to escape the hustle and bustle of the rest of the island, where you can admire the infinite blue and the still unspoiled surrounding landscape, where until some time ago the only inhabitants were wild rabbits, and again, the sounds that are heard are those of birds and toads while the scents come from wild herbs and salt.

The Lighthouse was built in 1891 by the French company Sauter Lemmonier specialized in electrical construction and today is a true iconic monument of the Mykonos island. The tower is nineteen meters high and the focal plane is one hundred eighty four meters above sea level.

To date, little more remains of a “ruin” and sorry for the word, but the view that the Armenistis Lighthouse offers from its promontory is unique. One of the best places to admire the beautiful sunset that Mykonos manages to give every evening, when the light transforms everything into a palette of colors and Mother Nature as a skilled painter expresses her soul.

The Armenistis Lighthouse began its history in 1887 when both the lands and the seas, without lighting and only with the help of the stars for the sailors, the English steamship VOLTA sinks making eleven crew members lose their lives. In 1890 the year in which Agata Christie was born and Oscar Wilde published “The Portrait of Dorian Gray”, the construction of the Lighthouse began. From the nearby Houlakia beach the materials to start the work were unloaded and thanks to historical families of the Mykonos island such as the Xenarios, Vardalachos and Grysparis who made the animals available to facilitate transfers, this symbol of the island came to life. An eight-meter octagonal tower with a diameter of three meters complete with kitchen, bathroom, cistern, warehouses and dormitories for the guardians that followed one another over the years.

Turning your gaze forward from the Armenistis Lighthouse you can clearly see the Tinos island and on clear days it almost seems like you can touch it with its Tsiknias mountain which, going down towards the sea meets the Papargyras Lighthouse in Livadia right in front of the Mykonos island. To the west, the Syros and Delos island can be seen. The Armenistis Lighthouse and the Papargyras Lighthouse marked the narrow passage of the sea between the two islands at night.

In 1927 the mechanism of the lighthouse visible at twenty three nautical miles, is enhanced by bringing its illuminating light to thirty six nautical miles. To date, the mechanism of the first lighthouse lamp is located outside the Aegean Maritime Museum which is located in the capital Mykonos Town in the Tria Pigadia center, a characteristic area of the city where there are three wells (Tria Pigadia in Greek) which, until the 1950s, supplied water to the village. A nice tradition tells that whoever drinks the water from the wells will surely return to the island later.

How to reach the Armenistis Lighthouse

Let’s say it is not quite so easy but believe it is absolutely worth it, by car or scooter (both vehicles are fine), being careful, however, because the road is sometimes unpaved. Coming from Tourlos, you have to follow for Agios Stefanos, at the quadrant turn left to the beach. At about 50 meters there is a crossroads, on the right you will find Haoulakia beach, follow it until the beach no longer has sand, still a piece of dirt road and here you are.

We know that to everything we describe we recommend putting it in things to do in Mykonos and that it would take much more time than a vacation to be able to visit everything, but if you organize yourself well, we are sure you will be able to see most of the wonders that this island offers, therefore make a perfect roadmap and insert the Armenistis Lighthouse, the real outsider among the most beautiful places to admire the sunset and live moments of pure relaxation.
