Arkasa Village Karpathos

Arkasa village, the second largest after the capital Pigadia, is located on the southwestern coast of the Karpathos island about sixteen kilometers from the capital.

On the slopes of the surrounding hills, Arkasa has an amphitheater shape with a large promontory called Paleokastro where the ruins of the ancient city of Arkesia are located. A village with colorful houses with flower gardens with a thousand colors, a beautiful main square with taverns and cafes where you can relax and enjoy the tranquility of the village. An ideal place for a holiday in Greece where you can take a walk both day and night, among souvenir shops, bars where to have an aperitif and a wide choice of authentic restaurants and taverns.

The origins of Arkasa are very ancient, the settlement was already present in the Minoan period and together with the nearby Finiki village about two kilometers away, once the main port of Karpathos, it was considered an important meeting point for all routes to the Dodecanese.

What to see in Arkasa

Absolutely not to be missed and therefore to be included in the list of things to see in Karparthos the ancient Acropolis of Arkesia. An important archaeological site located on the rocky cliff of Paleokastro that juts into the sea, with a Mycenaean fortress dating back to the second century BC where today you can admire the remains of the Cyclopean walls reinforced by towers of the classical and Hellenistic period, buildings and water cisterns . The foundations of an early Christian basilica with monolithic marble columns are also visible. The view from here is something shocking, the view sweeps from the entire bay to the surrounding area.

The 5th century Byzantine temple of Agia Anastasia is a perfect architectural work of the period. Its floor is finely decorated with precious mosaics, most of which are exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes.

Arkasa also houses a small Archaeological Museum where many artifacts from the ancient Acropolis and finds from the entire area are preserved.

Arkasa beach

In Arkasa you can relax on Agios Nikolaos beach. A small sandy coast bathed by a clear and turquoise sea. Being very exposed to the winds, it is much loved and frequented by surfers from all over the world as the position and the sea currents create perfect wave games for lovers of this sport. Let’s say that to swim in this stretch of sea it is better to be an expert swimmer because the waters are often rough and immediately deep. It is equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas, showers and a tavern where you can indulge in some Greek delicacies.

Right in front, the wild and unspoiled Kasos island, and in the surrounding small coves that can be reached only by boat (in Arkasa there are structures that offer day trips). The village of Arkasa also being in a particularly lush area of vegetation, offers beautiful walks to immerse yourself in nature.

How to get to Arkasa

We will never cease to advise you if you choose Karpathos for your holidays in Greece, to rent a car because it is certainly the best way to get around the island and also safer since it often blows wind and with the scooter can be difficult. Always head towards the southern part to the west and following the signs you will arrive in Arkasa. If, on the other hand, you don’t have your own vehicle, a bus service connects the two towns from Pigadia. Always remember to consult the timetables as they can change according to the period.

A destination to discover on the beautiful Karpathos island for an exploratory day in search of natural beauty.
