The Apollo Theater is considered one of the most important attractions of Syros and is a cultural heritage of the island located in the capital Ermoupoli.
Built between 1862 and 1864 by the architect Pietro Sampo, it is also called La Piccola Scala as it was modeled taking inspiration from the Theater of Scala in Milan with influences that are also inspired by the San Carlo Theatre in Naples, the Castelfranco Theater and from the Pergola Theatrer in Florence. The dome, on the other hand, is linked to the 19th century French architecture.
During the Second World War, the theater suffered several damages and was used as a simple cinema. In 1959 the municipality decided to renovate it but due to a succession of events, the restoration began in the 80s and in July 2000 after a long and scrupulous restoration finally reopened the doors with its velvet seats and painted ceilings, restoring value and majesty to the place.
It opened its doors for the first time on 20 April 1864 with Verdi’s Rigoletto and then a succession of high-level theatrical performances with artists from all over Europe.
Nowadays it hosts various artistic and cultural events such as the Aegean Festival which every year brings lots of fans from all over the world.
Inside, in addition to admiring the magnificence of the building, there is also the Museo del Teatro also called the “place of memory” where finds from local and non-local artists have contributed and consolidated the important role in history.
It is open every day from 10.00 to 14.00 and from 18.00 to 21.00 excluding the days when events and tests are scheduled.
