Alikes village is located in the north east of Zakynthos Island about eighteen kilometers from the capital Zakynthos City.
A picturesque coastal village in a fertile valley where olive groves and vineyards are the setting. Its name in Greek means “saline” and I owe it to the fact that once in this area there were the most famous and productive enough to satisfy the needs of all of Zakynthos. Unfortunately, today very little is left of this important profitable activity and the main source of livelihood has become tourism.
Yes, because Alykes, in addition to having developed exponentially with many offers of accommodation facilities such as hotels, apartments, resorts, shops, taverns and restaurants where you can enjoy excellent Mediterranean cuisine, is located in a beautiful bay not far from the main attractions of the island like Shipwreck Beach and Blue Caves, rather than Zante Town, Tsilivi and Laganas to the south.
Alykes village in a fertile plain before the mountain range that divides the island in two, is perfect for lovers of trekking and mountain biking where different routes can make you discover incredible views in the midst of still wild and unspoiled nature. Alykes is suitable for any age, from families with children, to couples, to young people, to the not so young and to groups of friends, here you can find everything you are always looking for during a holiday in Zakynthos. The regions of, Alykanas, Ammudi and Psaru fall within the Municipality of Alykes, all positioned on the coast with sandy beaches, warm and extremely clear waters.
In addition to the salt flats, there is a small river that crosses the beach before finishing its run into the sea where you can admire an ancient stone bridge with five arches built by the hand of the British. Around further wooden bridges that allow you to quickly reach the center of the village.
Alykes beach is one of the most popular beaches on the island of Zakynthos. It has a long and wide coastline of soft golden sand bathed by a clear and crystalline turquoise sea. The seabed drops gently, perfect for families with children and swimming lovers. Divided by a long pier where fishermen usually dock their boats, it is well equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas at a cost of about € 8 per day, beach bars, restaurants and typical taverns where to eat something. Sometimes it is a bit windy, in fact, lovers of water sports where Aeolus is essential gather to practice the various disciplines and have fun. Being very large, it is hardly super crowded thus allowing you to spend days in complete relaxation enjoying the warm rays of the sun.Alikes beach is also full of beautiful shells that must stay in place .
The extension of Alykes beach is Alykanas beach, so much so that you can’t tell when one ends and the other begins. The homonymous village has a great archaeological importance so as to believe that it was the ancient city of Arcadia and the numerous excavations carried out in the area have brought to light many finds belonging to the Mycenaean era. Here, too, the beach is fantastic, soft sand, crystal clear sea but a bit deeper than Alykes.
Wherever you are staying, always head north east and following the road signs you will arrive safely. As always, it is better to be autonomous with a rental vehicle but if you do not want to opt for independence, there is always a bus service that connects the main towns of the island several times a day. Always keep an eye on the time tables it is important not to stay on foot.
Two ideal villages for a relaxing and fun holiday in Zakynthos or a pleasant trip to discover the island. Definitely one of the things to see in Zakynthos.
