Let’s start by distinguishing the two beaches of Agios Nikolaos which are located in Karpathos.
One can be found in the southwestern part of the island about a couple of kilometers from the Arkasa Village. It is a very popular beach for lovers of kitesurfing and all sports that require the wind, because here the wind blows and how!
A coast of fine sand with some small stones, clean and clear waters, an intense turquoise sea, a seabed that descends quickly and many many waves. The naturist context makes it seem almost a paradise, wild tamarisk trees, high promontories on the sides dotted with Mediterranean scrub, a postcard in a nutshell especially for the contrast of colors. It is equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas for about € 7 per day and a nice beach volleyball court where you can burn calories.
The ideal place for an aperitif at sunset which from this side you can admire in all its beauty with the sky changing colors and in the end reflected in the sea, a painting of Mother Nature.
It is always very crowded during the summer season so ‘if you want a relaxing day we say that it is not the most suitable beach.
Reaching it is not difficult, as a reference point keep the Arkasa village and from there follow the road to the south which is asphalted but a bit steep and in no time you will be there.
The other beach of the same name also called Agios Nikolaos instead we find it on the opposite side, to the north on the east side about four kilometers from the picturesque Spoa Village.
This is certainly the right place for a day of relaxation and tranquility! It is the town beach of the country which are actually two. Both have a beach of small white stones with transparent waters, a turquoise-colored sea (on the other hand, all Karpathos offers a sea of this wonderful color), with a seabed that does not drop immediately but remains low for a few meters from the shore.
Thanks to the imposing mountains that surround the area, unlike its twin, here the sea is almost always flat, therefore perfect for families with children and for those who love to swim. Snorkelers can also enjoy exploring the fish fauna and flora around the rock formations.
The largest part of the Agios Nikolaos beach is equipped with a few sun beds and umbrellas, while for food and drinks there is only to choose which tavern to sit and enjoy the delicacies of Greek and local cuisine. A few salty cedar trees frame the beach giving it an almost exotic touch. The smaller one, on the other hand, is not very organized, much more suitable for do-it-yourselfers who will be able to spread their towel where they will feel most inspired and find shade under some tamarisk trees. On the south side, however, hidden behind the port is a small rocky bay, a favorite destination for divers.
From the Agios Nikoalos port also boats leave every day that will allow you to discover other small pearls where you will find absolute privacy and a screaming sea.
Keeping Pigadia as a reference point for simplicity towards the north, the road is comfortable and paved. Follow the signs then towards Spoa and from there you start going down to Agios Nikolaos.
Note that the route to get there is wonderful amidst rich vegetation and splendid views of the Aegean Sea.
Two opposite beaches, one fascinating especially for sportsmen, the other for lovers of relaxation, you decide which one is best for your holiday in Greece and mark them in the things to see in Karpathos in one case or another you will be anyway happy and satisfied.
