Vikos–Aoos National Park is located in north-western Greece, in the region of Epirus, one of the wildest, most authentic and unspoilt areas of the country. It is an extraordinary mountainous territory, dominated by the Pindus massif, where deep gorges, crystal-clear springs, dense forests and small stone villages intertwine in a landscape that can hardly be described simply as “scenic”. Here nature is still in command, silence becomes a sound in itself, and the landscapes seem to belong to an era when the world was still young.
At the heart of the park is the Vikos Gorge, a spectacular canyon that in some places reaches a depth of 1,000 metres. For years it was listed in the Guinness World Records as “the deepest gorge in the world in relation to its width”. It is a breathtaking place, especially when viewed from above from the panoramic viewpoints of Beloi, Oxya or Vikos Village. The vertical walls rise like gigantic natural cathedrals, sculpted by time and by the millennia-long action of the waters of the Voidomatis River.
Vikos–Aoos National Park extends across the northern part of the Zagori region, one of the most beautiful areas of mainland Greece, famous for its 46 traditional villages (the renowned Zagorochoria), built entirely of stone and considered an architectural treasure of unique value.
From a naturalistic point of view, the park is a biological mosaic of enormous importance: beech forests, black firs, pine trees, rare medicinal plants, mountain orchids and extraordinary wildlife including brown bears, wolves, lynxes, birds of prey and otters. The climate varies enormously: mild and colourful in spring, cool in summer, spectacular in autumn, icy and fairy-tale-like in winter when the snow transforms the park into a Nordic painting.

The territory of Vikos–Aoos National Park is one of the richest in history in all of mainland Greece. Its mountains, gorges and forests have been crossed by nomadic shepherds, monks, merchants and warriors since prehistoric times. Archaeological discoveries in the caves of the area – stone tools, animal bones, traces of settlements – testify that humans were already living here during the Palaeolithic period.
During the Classical period, this territory belonged to the Epirote peoples, a confederation of mountain tribes linked to the cult of Zeus. The oracle of Dodona, the oldest sanctuary dedicated to Zeus, is located not far from the park and was the spiritual centre of the entire region. Many of the routes that cross the mountains today actually follow ancient paths used by pilgrims travelling to the sacred temple.
During the Middle Ages, with the creation of the Despotate of Epirus, the region became a strategic and spiritual refuge. Monks, hermits and religious communities found the Vikos Gorge to be a perfect place for meditation and ascetic life. Some caves in the upper part of the canyon were true hermitages, where monks lived in isolation for years.
The Ottoman period marked a crucial moment. The villages of Zagori obtained special forms of autonomy thanks to their skills as merchants and stone builders. It was precisely during this period that the extraordinary tradition of the Zagori stonemasons emerged, the finest in all of Greece. They were responsible for the famous arched stone bridges that still cross rivers and valleys today, such as Kokkoros Bridge, Plakidas Bridge and many others.
The 20th century brought wars, exoduses and depopulation, but it also allowed this territory to be preserved. In 1973 the area was recognised as Vikos–Aoos National Park, specifically to protect its biodiversity and unique landscape. Today the entire park is a natural treasure protected by the European Natura 2000 network.
The history of Vikos is an interweaving of spirituality, resilience, nature and culture: a living mosaic that continues to move anyone who walks along these ancient trails.
Epirus is one of the Greek regions richest in ancient mythology, and Vikos National Park is a territory that breathes legends at every step. Here nature and myth touch. The rocks tell stories, the waters speak, the trees preserve tales of gods, nymphs and mountain spirits.
The park’s proximity to the ancient oracle of Dodona is significant. Here, in the sacred grove of the talking oak, Zeus communicated through the rustling of the leaves, interpreted by the priests.
Many of the park’s trails are considered ancient ritual routes travelled by pilgrims heading to Dodona to ask for protection, answers or blessings.
According to popular tradition, the waters of the Voidomatis – which flows through the park – were inhabited by benevolent nymphs, pure spirits who protected travellers and children. It was said that on full-moon nights they sang among the rocks, creating melodic echoes that travelled down the gorge.
Many ancient cultures viewed deep gorges as gateways to the underworld.
The Vikos Gorge, with its breathtaking vertical walls, was considered a sacred place, inhabited by chthonic deities and spirits connected to the earth and water.
According to legend, an enormous dragon lived on the slopes of Mount Tymfi and guarded the springs of the Voidomatis. When it moved, the earth trembled and small stones fell from its scales which, it was said, became the white pebbles of the river.
This is perhaps the most fascinating part of the mythology linked to the park.
For centuries, the healers of the area – the famous Vikoiates – gathered medicinal herbs from the walls of the gorge.
Legend has it that the plants growing in this canyon were blessed by the gods, because they were born in a place where nature is so extreme that it was considered divine.
The Vikoiates became famous throughout Greece: healers, herbalists, white magicians of the mountains.
The mythology of Vikos is not simply folklore: it is a reflection of the profound impact this landscape has always had on humankind.
