Secret Places to Discover in the Cyclades

The 7 Least Known Beaches

When people think of the Cyclades, the mind immediately goes to the islands of Santorini, Mykonos, Paros and the long golden stretches of Naxos. Yet scattered among their winds and ancient rocks lie secret beaches, forgotten bays and small coves reachable only by those who truly love to explore and let themselves be guided by curiosity. These are corners of authentic Greece, where the sea takes on shades unseen in more famous locations, and where history, mythology and nature intertwine without filters.

Perfect for those seeking silence, beauty and authenticity!

1 Agios Sostis – Serifos

Where it is located: northeastern coast of the island of Serifos.

How to reach it: via a dirt road accessible by car or quad.

Agios Sostis is a hidden little gem, a double bay separated by a thin strip of sand that seems to float on the sea. The small church of Agios Sostis, white as milk, dominates the hill and tells a local story: according to tradition, the island’s fishermen came here to pray to the saint for favourable seas.

Shore and seabed: fine golden sand, gently sloping seabed, ideal for those who love to swim in calm, clear waters.

Services: no bar or taverna; bring water, food and an umbrella.

Accommodation: none nearby, only scattered private houses on the hills.

Suitable for: couples, families with children, photography lovers, solo travellers and anyone seeking peace and nature.

Curiosity: on calm days the water becomes a giant mirror, perfect for long, relaxing swims.

2 Lichada Bay – Andros

Where it is located: north-western coast of the island of Andros.

How to reach it: 20–25-minute trek or taxi boat from the nearby bay.

Lichada Bay is one of the most difficult beaches to reach on Andros, and this is exactly what makes it special. Framed by volcanic rocks and low Cycladic vegetation, the bay is a natural amphitheatre often sheltered from the wind.

History and myth: it is said that the area once served as a refuge for pirates who exploited its hidden position to escape the winds and merchant ships.

Shore: white pebbles and transparent water.

Seabed: perfect for snorkelling thanks to the small underwater caves.

Services: absolutely none.

Suitable for: hikers, adventure-seekers, couples looking for an isolated spot.

3 Kedros – Donoussa

Where it is located: southern part of the island of Donoussa.

How to reach it: by car in 5 minutes or on foot from the village in about 15–20 minutes along the paved road descending to the beach.

Kedros is perhaps the most alternative beach in the Cyclades. In the 1970s a small hippie community was born here, and even today a free and informal atmosphere lingers in the air.

History: on the seabed, just a few metres from the shore, lies the wreck of a German ship bombed during the Second World War.

Shore: golden sand and wild vegetation.

Seabed: a mix of sand and rocks, perfect for light diving and snorkelling.

Services: a single seasonal taverna serving traditional dishes.

Accommodation: some rooms for rent in the upper area.

Suitable for: young people, snorkelling lovers, free spirits.

4 Agios Theologos – Amorgos

Where it is located: south of Aegiali on the island of Amorgos.

How to reach it: 30-minute trail through rocks and little goats.

This beach is a miracle of nature: a long stretch of smooth pebbles and deep blue sea, set between vertical cliffs.

Mythology: according to tradition, it was a sacred place where sailors offered gifts to the god Proteus, one of the sons of Poseidon, to ensure a safe journey.

Shore: white pebbles, very quiet.

Seabed: immediately deep, cold and crystal clear water.

Services: none, total silence.

Suitable for: lovers of wild nature and primordial landscapes.

5 Kalydon – Naxos, the ghost beach

Where it is located: Stelida peninsula on the island of Naxos.

How to reach it: only by sea or via a short rocky trek.

Kalydon is called the “ghost beach” by locals because it changes shape with the wind. Some summers it appears as a strip of sand, other times as a small natural cave. A mysterious chameleon of the Aegean.

Curiosity: the area was once an obsidian extraction site.

Shore: sand and rocks, depending on the sea conditions.

Seabed: spectacular due to the light effects.

Services: none.

Suitable for: explorers, photographers, couples.

6 Faneromeni – Syros

Where it is located: south-west of the island of Syros.

How to reach it: dirt road accessible by car or scooter + 15-minute walk.

Faneromeni is one of the few truly untouched beaches of Syros, an island better known for its elegant villages than for wild corners.

History: it takes its name from the church of Panagia Faneromeni, built over a cave considered miraculous.

Shore: sand mixed with small shells.

Seabed: calm water and shallow depths, ideal for relaxing swims.

Services: none.

Accommodation: only several kilometres away.

Suitable for: adventurous families, couples, anyone seeking absolute quiet.

7 Agios Nikolaos Secret Kolymbithres – Paros

Where it is located: northern area of Paros, far from the tourist beaches.

How to reach it: 15–20-minute trek from Monastiri.

Among rocks sculpted by the wind lies a small emerald-coloured bay, far less known than the famous Kolymbithres.

Mythology: legend has it that the rocks were shaped by Boreas, the god of the north wind.

Shore: sand, soft rocks and natural pools.

Seabed: ideal for exploring small cavities.

Services: none, total isolation.

Suitable for: photo lovers, couples, zen travellers.

Those who choose these beaches seek authentic Greece: the Greece of wind, sea, scents and stories whispered by the islanders. You won’t find loud music or rows of umbrellas you will find space, light, silence and the pleasure of discovering something known only to a few.
