Kimolos Island

And here we are at a small pearl of the Cyclades Islands, Kimolos island. We find it north of its bigger sister the Milos island much more known and beaten by tourism.

A secret casket that few know and that few above all venture since reaching it is not so comfortable as it is not direct. Given its size, it cannot contain more than a certain number of visitors and the consequence is that it is still pristine and never overcrowded. It must be said that if Kimolos is your choice for your holiday in Greece, it is advisable to book well, but very well in advance as availability is very limited and above all because its visitors are mostly people who come back every year.

However, if you are unable to find accommodation, it is still possible to go and visit it with a day trip from Milos, precisely from Pollonia every day at regular intervals, the famous "Pantofla" starts where you can also embark your car or moped.

With an area of 35 square kilometers it is famous for its disarming hospitality, here its inhabitants are always willing to give you information and help you in case of difficulty. Of volcanic origins, it has a mountainous area rich in natural quarries, caves where pirates once took refuge, gypsum mines (white is the master in Kimolos) and beautiful beaches bathed by transparent and crystalline waters with iridescent colors of the blue tone .

You choose Kimolos for a holiday in Greece to spend peaceful days in total relaxation where the only noises are those of the sea, cicadas and roosters. If you plan to come here and find nightlife or extreme entertainment forget it, Kimolos is only for connoisseurs with an atmosphere of old Greek movies where traditions are passed from generation to generation and where nature is the undisputed queen.

The only village present is Chorio, the capital and where the port that connects it to Milos and also to other islands is located. In the classic Cycladic style with its labyrinthine mazes, low whitewashed houses with blue windows adorned with colorful bougainvillea, it is the heart of the island. All the activities and comforts are concentrated here, if we can call them that. It is located at the foot of a hill in the southeast part where most of its inhabitants live. The village was built around the ancient Venetian castle dating back to the 16th century and is separated into two areas. Mesa Kastro (castle=Kastro mesa= inside) and Exo Kastro (Exo=outside). For a moment of ancient culture, a beautiful church which houses a wonderful collection of icons.

As on the Milos island, there are the characteristic Syrmata, buildings dug into the rocks with colored doors that served as a shelter for fishing boats. Each door has a different color and this peculiarity was created to be able to identify the property of one family rather than another.

It should be emphasized that being an island it is sometimes windswept, the western part is the most exposed and on this side you can observe a curious natural sculpture called Skiadi, a composition of rock of a different nature with a mushroom shape, shaped by the events atmospheric.

The north-east area, on the other hand, is more sheltered from the gusts and therefore perfect for sunbathing and swimming, for example the Agios Georgios beach with its soft sandy beach or the Prassa beach with a more ' Caribbean. To the southeast, other unmissable coasts such as Aliki beach, ideal for snorkelers or Bonastsa beach with extremely clean and turquoise waters.

A small island waiting to be discovered that will enchant its visitors and where you can spend a peaceful holiday based on unspoilt nature, beautiful sea and disarming simplicity.
