2 minutes to read

The Dodecanese Archipelago is the group of islands located closest to the Turkish coast at the gateway to Asia Minor.

A territory where traditions are still very deep-rooted and are handed down from generation to generation always with great care and feeling, islands sometimes frozen in time, sometimes ahead of time, some certainly very touristy but which still retain a Greek atmosphere where discover enchanted places, where history has enormous weight and where you can naturally find a dream sea and beaches.

With this article we want to give you an idea of the most beautiful beaches in some islands that are part of the Archipelago so you can also decide which part of Greece to visit for your 2024 holidays.

Rhodes Tsambika Beach

Tsambika beach is found on the east coast of Rhodes not far from the Archangelos village. It has a wide coastline of almost a kilometer with soft golden sand, transparent waters, a turquoise sea and a seabed that slopes down for the first few meters and then becomes deep. Certainly perfect for families with small children who will be able to play safely on the shore. Its name comes thanks to the marvelous Monastery above the promontory at 340 meters from the Byzantine era which can be reached by a path with three hundred steps where you can enjoy a suggestive panorama. Sunset is the best time to admire such beauty. It is partly equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars and water games while behind it you will find taverns and restaurants where you can enjoy excellent fresh fish. A part of Tsambika beach is free and a small area is much loved by naturists. Getting there is simple, keep the town of Arachangelos as a point of reference and follow the road signs. From Faliraki there are local buses that reach here.

Kos Agios Fokas Beach

Agios Fokas beach in Kos is found in the north just before the natural spas of the island. A corner of paradise with a beach of small stones, clear and crystalline waters, a sea that goes from light blue to sparkling blue with a shallow seabed for the first few meters and then drops immediately so if you have small children, be extra careful . Opposite, the coasts of Dacia in Türkiye. Immersed in a well-kept garden, it has a truly peaceful atmosphere, here you will certainly spend a day in total relaxation without missing anything. It is equipped with very comfortable sunbeds and umbrellas (we advise you to always book because availability is limited and it is always very popular especially by local Greeks), a bar for something fresh and a restaurant that offers traditional dishes but revisited in a modern way or quick lunches and something international. During the summer, events are organized in the evening such as the full moon party where you can admire a wonderful moon that lights up the entire area and swim at night. To reach Agios Fokas beach you either have a rental vehicle or you can take the bus from Kos Town to the spa.

Kalymnos Palionisos Beach

Palionisos beach is in the north-eastern part of the island, inside a fjord, which is common to Kalymnos thanks to its geomorphology. A small coast of pebbles, a sea that fades to emerald green, clear and transparent waters with a shallow seabed for the first few meters and then quickly descends. Its position always offers a calm sea where you can relax in long swims. It is equipped with a few sunbeds and umbrellas and for something to eat there are two excellent taverns with an enchanting view of the bay. One part is completely free and to protect yourself from the sun you can spread out your towel under a tamarisk tree. The area of Palionisos with its small village where you will find a few houses and some inns to enjoy excellent fresh fish, is also very popular with hikers and freeclimbers. In fact, the Sykaki cave is one of the attractions of Palionisos, you can reach it on foot or climb it, hang on and enjoy the amazing view. Getting to Palionisos beach is now easy with a brand new road that winds through the mountains where you meet scenic corners of Kalymnos. If you want, you can also rent a boat by sea. A perfect beach to regenerate.

Leros Kokkina Beach

Kokkina beach is located south east of the Leros island. Its name which means reddish is due to the color of its sand which, mixed with dark pebbles and the ocher color of the surrounding landscape, makes it particular. At Kokkina beach, you will find a still wild and intact environment, very clean waters with a thousand shades of blue, a few tamarisk trees where you can take shelter during the hottest hours and nothing more. Loved by naturists, it is undoubtedly a point on Leros where you can come to find peace, relax and let yourself be lulled by the sound of the sea. Obviously it is not equipped so if you decide to spend the whole day there, remember to bring everything you need. To reach it you need to have a suitable vehicle as the road is dirt and demanding, but you can still leave your vehicle in the car park and take a short walk. Certainly a corner of Leros where you will leave your heart.

Karpathos Apella Beach

Apella beach is defined as one of the most beautiful in the Aegean and when you see it you will understand why. We find it on the eastern side less than twenty kilometers from Pigadia, one of the most sought after seaside resorts on the island, nestled in a beautiful bay. A three hundred meter coastline with soft immaculate sand mixed with a few pebbles, waters with changing colors that go from sky blue to intense turquoise, with a seabed that slopes gently for the first few meters from the shore. The vegetation of maritime pines and rock formations that surround it make the landscape even more evocative. One of the busiest and best known in Karpathos, during the summer it is overrun by tourists so if you want to enjoy it in peace it is better to go there early in the morning or late in the afternoon so as to also admire the beautiful sunset. It is partly served by sunbeds and umbrellas while a typical tavern can refresh you and offer fresh drinks. One area, however, is free so you can sit wherever you feel most inspired, perhaps under a tree to rest when the sun is hot. In the center there is a group of rocks full of starfish and small fish where you can do some snorkeling. It is possible to reach Apella beach either by sea or by land, just follow the road to the Aperi village and then the road signs for the beach.

Patmos Psili Ammos Beach

Psili Ammos beach on the mystical and sophisticated Patmos island is located in the south-west part, about ten kilometers from Chora. A wonderful bay still intact and uncontaminated which presents itself with fine golden sand (psili ammos in Greek in fact means fine sand), soft dunes behind with tamarisk trees that envelop it like an embrace, clear waters and an intense blue sea. Its position does not protect it much from the wind and therefore since getting there is not that easy, always consult the weather forecast before embarking on the adventure. It is not equipped, you can sit wherever you like, while to eat or drink something a delicious tavern open only during the summer period offers classic Greek and local cuisine. The southern part of Psili Ammos beach is a haven for naturists. Getting there is quite an undertaking but it is certainly rewarded with its extraordinary beauty. There are two options, the first most convenient is by sea, based on your finances you can choose between a taxi boat or an organized excursion. The second is by land with a wonderful walk of about half an hour from an ancient path between the mule track and the arid hills of Patmos.

Symi Agios Georgios Dysalonas Beach

Agios Georgios Dysalonas beach is located in an idyllic bay south-east of the island of Symi between Pedi beach and Marathounta beach. The cliffs behind it are impressive, reaching three hundred meters and protecting it, thus creating a truly postcard landscape. Its small coastline is made of light pebbles while the sea that washes it has crazy colors that go from light blue to turquoise to brilliant blue. The seabed drops immediately and given its position you should know that at midday it goes into shade. It owes its name to the chapel dedicated to Agios Gerogios built on the edge of a rock. It goes without saying that everything here is not equipped as Mother Nature created it and it is perfect for a day in solitude and to escape the hectic daily life. Obviously it can only be reached by sea with a taxi boat from the port of Symi. In reality the whole island can be appreciated more by boat, it has truly dreamy coves. A curiosity Dysalonas derives from the adjective Disalotos which means difficult to access, a very appropriate name.

Astypalea Kaminakia Beach

Kaminakia beach is located southwest of the beautifu Astypalea island in a delightful bay about ten kilometers from Chora. A large strip of sand and pebbles, crystal clear and immaculate waters, a sea of changing colors that almost looks like a giant aquarium and deep seabeds: this is what to expect from Kaminakia beach. A primitive nature with caves hidden among the rocks where you can have fun discovering the depths, trees that give shade in the hottest moments, a few sunbeds and umbrellas and a couple of taverns where you can sit down, enjoy excellent dishes of fresh fish and traditional Greek cuisine with a panorama of the Aegean that will leave you speechless. Reaching it is feasible but only with an appropriate vehicle, the road is completely unpaved and not very comfortable. Going south-west you arrive at Vatses beach and at the crossroads follow the signs. An easier way is by sea, from Pera Gialos every day there are boats that reach Agios Ioannis passing through Kaminakia and Vatses.

Kassos Ammoua Beach

Ammoua beach on the small but wonderful Kassos island halfway between  Karpathos island and the Crete island, we find it three kilometers from Fry on the eastern side to the north. A beach of fine gold-colored sand, waters that go from turquoise to emerald, clean, crystalline and with a sandy seabed that descends after a few meters from the shore. Around rocks dotted with some shrubs, a wild and still intact landscape. The bay actually offers four coastlines, three of which are quite isolated and made up of colored pebbles and is perfect for a quiet day at the beach. Unfortunately, the position of Ammou beach does not always protect it from the winds that blow on the Greek islands, so if you decide to pay a visit to it, always check the weather conditions. It is partly equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas, a beach volleyball court and a bar restaurant where you can eat and drink something. Near the beach is the church of San Konstantinos and places where you can admire a breathtaking sunset over the Aegean.

Kastellorizo The Blue Cave

Kastellorizo, the last island of Greece, which became famous for the film "Mediterranean", in recent years has become one of the favorite destinations for travelers seeking peace and a still virgin territory. It hosts a beautiful cave discovered by chance by a local fisherman, called The Blue Cave due to the shades of the incredibly blue and transparent water, a strange play of sunlight reflecting from the sea. The Blue Cave, approximately 40-50 meters long, 25-30 meters wide and 20-25 meters high, can only be reached by boat and the best time to visit it is early in the morning when the sun is not yet high and especially with the sea calm. The entrance is very narrow and you have to lie down on the bottom of the boat so the visit is not recommended for people who suffer from claustrophobia. Once inside, however, the show is truly fascinating, groups of stalactites that seem animated with the reflection of the sun and if you are lucky you may find monk seals and sea turtles. A dive is mandatory to live an unforgettable experience! The cost of the boat is around €15 per person and it departs from the port of Megeisti.

Lipsi Platis Gialos Beach

Platis Gialos beach is undoubtedly the most beautiful and consequently the busiest on the Lipsi island and we find it in the north-west part about three kilometers from the port. Nestled in a small bay, it has a crescent-shaped beach with sand mixed with stones, clean and clear waters and a sea with turquoise shades, a natural swimming pool in all respects. The seabed is stony at first and then becomes sandy. Behind it are tamarisk trees where you can spread out your towel and enjoy this little corner of paradise. In summer it gets very crowded but it doesn't matter, the sea is so beautiful that you forget about the crowds. It is not equipped, no sunbeds or umbrellas, here the first-come, first-served rule applies. On Platis Gialos beach there is a historic tavern where you can sit and eat something truly typical and homemade, all accompanied by an enchanting view and a typically Greek atmosphere. To reach it it is easy, if you have a rental vehicle just follow the signs, on foot from the port there are about thirty pleasant vehicles or by bus there is a run every hour.

Tilos Red Beach

The remote and hidden Red beach of Tilos island is located in the north east just after another beautiful beach, Lethra. The Red beach has a coastline of purple sand, turquoise and transparent waters. The perfect place for a day of extreme relaxation almost bordering on boredom. The landscape that surrounds it is still primordial and tremendously wild. It is not equipped and you will be practically in the middle of nowhere so remember to bring everything and everything in case you decide to spend the whole day there. Opposite is the uninhabited island of Gaidaros, the island of donkeys (gaidaros in Greek means donkey). The reason why it is still uncontaminated and quiet is that reaching it is not exactly simple, starting from Livadia you have to follow a dirt path for about forty minutes but which will lead you to the discovery of scenic points that you will hardly forget.
