Kolymbithra Beach Tinos

2 minutes to read

The beautifu Kolymbithra beach which in Greek means monastery, we find it in the northwestern part of Tinos island in the plain of Livadi about fifteen kilometers from Chora the capital also called Tinos Town.

A beautiful bay that includes two beaches, Mikri Ammos beach the smallest and narrowest part (in Greek Mikri means small Ammos means sand) and the Megali Ammos beach called by the locals California the largest (in Greek Megali means great).

Both have a coastline of soft golden sand with a sea of turquoise shades and crystal clear waters with a bottom that drops quite quickly. The smaller coast is more protected from the winds and the waters are generally calm, therefore suitable for those who love swimming and where beach volleyball tournaments are also organized. Unlike the beach of Megali Ammos, on the other hand, it is more exposed and sometimes also generates large waves, thus becoming a paradise for lovers of water sports such as windsurfing.

Mikri Ammos beach well known and frequented by both tourists and locals, is well equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas, a bar serving fresh drinks and quick snacks and a tavern right on the promontory that offers a view of the sea where dishes are served of traditional cuisine among the best on the island. If you love walking, heading east you will find several small coves where you could also find yourself in solitude. On the contrary, Megali Ammos beach is very quiet, equipped with few sun beds and umbrellas and for almost its entire free length. It is certainly the right place for those who want a relaxing day without too much confusion.

The area of Kolymbithra is rich in waters that come directly from the mountains forming a small lake that is home to nice ducks, turtles and various species of rare birds.

The island of Tinos is in fact located on one of the main migratory routes. The Livadia plain is the only lowland on the island of Tinos, an agricultural and rural landscape where excellent artichokes are grown and bees are bred to produce the famous Tinos honey, one of the best in the Archipelago of the Cyclades Islands.

Right in front of the bay is the island of Dragonisi so called for its bizarre shape that resembles a dragon, which has become part of the Natura 2000 project for the protection of the monk seal that finds refuge in its natural caves and where they grow the rare yellow sea anemones.

How do you get to Kolymbithra Beach

t is necessary to have your own vehicle, a car is ideal as Tinos is sometimes whipped by the Meltemi, take the main road and follow the signs for the village of Komi, pass it, turn right and cross the small bridge until in Kolymbithra.

A destination definitely to be included in the list of things to do in Tinos for a relaxing day on the beach and to explore the hinterland full of surprises and landscapes so different that you sometimes think you are not on a Greek island.
