Tinos Beaches
Tinos island is truly a small Eden, both from a naturalistic point of view for a relaxing and peaceful holiday.
According to many, its sea is one of the most beautiful in Greece with such crystal clear waters that you can see every little detail of the seabed, despite its small size, it manages to give its visitors many beaches of different quality.
You will find immaculate sandy coasts, some with small or large pebbles, coves where you can forget about the clock and the frenzy, always with the certainty of finding an extremely clean and inviting sea.
The only drawback of the Tinos island is the wind factor. Either for its geographical position, or for its legendary curse of Borias the personification of the wind to which his beloved children were killed by Hercules following the killing of the latter's beloved friend, unleashing a hell of currents and winds for anyone passing by to date still not resolved. Having said this, however, the fury of Borias can be remedied, just move to the opposite coast from where the wind blows and find the long-awaited peace and joy of diving into the Aegean.
As always we give you some tips on the beaches so you can plan a nice itinerary in advance and maybe you can see as many of them as possible.
Kionia Beach
You will find Kionia beach in the southwest part of Tinos in its homonymous village. Just after the Agios Markos beach, right in front of it is the archaeological site of the Sanctuary of Neptune and Amphitrite from which you can admire an extraordinary panorama of the nearby of Syros island. Among hills covered with lush vegetation, here is this small coast made of sand mixed with pebbles with a sea that is almost always peaceful with crystalline and transparent waters. The seabed descends gently, therefore perfect for families with children and those who love to enjoy long swims. It is equipped with a few sunbeds and umbrellas, however for those who like to feel free, they can spread out their towel in the free part. For catering, the village behind it offers several typical taverns where you can taste local delicacies and fresh fish. For those who want a quicker breakfast, the minimarkets will find everything they need. Kionia beach is cleaned even more times a day, its inhabitants particularly friendly with tourists try to keep the environment intact and perfectly cared for. It is also perfect for a mountain excursion or for an interesting dive or for renting a boat to head towards the small bays that surround the area. Its historical importance is due to the temple of Poseidon which according to mythology and archaeological finds is located right here in Kionia. It is said that it was an area of sacred waters and that the ancient Greeks came specifically to bathe in this beach to honor the Gods.
Agios Fokas Beach
Agios Fokas beach is located in the southern part of Tinos on the west side. It is considered the longest of the whole island and can be reached on foot from the capital Chora. A succession of coastline for miles, made of sand mixed with pebbles with a few trees where you can shelter during the hottest hours of the day. It is equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas, beach bars, restaurants and typical taverns where you can sit and enjoy local delicacies or classic Greek cuisine. Agios Fokas beach ends right on the slopes of the prehistoric hill of Vriocastro from which you can admire the sacred Delos isalnd and Mykonos island in the distance. Perfect for a day at the beach where you can take long, refreshing swims or indulge in various water sports such as windsurfing or a simple but healthy game of volleyball. In some sections there are also lifeguards who ensured the bathers.
Agios Romanos Beach
Agios Romanos beach is located in the southwest, less than ten kilometers from the capital Tinos Town. Enclosed in a splendid bay where you can see the Syros island on clear days, it has a fairly long but narrow coastline of soft golden sand mixed with a few small stones. Its waters are crystalline and clear while the sea takes on a sparkling blue color with backdrops that gradually slope down, for this reason very appreciated by families with small children. Surrounded by providential tamarisk trees that become a real godsend when the sun gets hotter, it is completely free, no equipment, you can choose the area you like best and spread out your beach towel to enjoy a wonderful day of sea. The locals love to come to Agios Romanos beach on weekends to spend Sunday together in the name of fun and relaxation. To appease hunger or silk, a local tavern where you can taste the typical dishes of Greek cuisine and local specialties. However, there are several restaurants or bars where you can satisfy your palate. Agios Romanos beach is still intact and in its semi-original state, no disturbing noises, only the sound of the sea and the shouting of happy children. If you want this part of the island as your base, the village behind it offers a good choice of apartments or small family businesses. For a break, pay a visit to the chapel which takes its name from the beach or if you like walking, there is a beautiful dirt path (not in flip flops please) which leads down to the secret beach of Apigania beach, wild and lonely. Reaching Agios Romanos beach is simple, head southwest following the road signs. There is no public service that comes up here so you will need to have your own transport.
Agios Petros Beach
And here we are at the remote Agios Petros beach always southwest of Tinos not far from the Kardiani village pearl of the island perched on the promontory with its particular marble architecture where the view is breathtaking. A paradise for a day dedicated to the sea and relaxation since it is often devoid of visitors. The respectable naturalistic context, here mother nature is still in its primitive and completely uncontaminated state. A beach separated by a large boulder that seems to be born by magic from the sea made of soft sand on the right side and gravel instead on the left side, clear and spotless waters, a sea that goes from turquoise to deep blue with a backdrop that gently descends where the little ones can have fun in safety. It is not equipped at all, so if you decide to spend the whole day there, remember to bring everything you need to drink, eat and above all to shelter from the sun. In August mainly due to its position, it is often windswept so consult the weather before going there without success if you don't like Eolo. It is perfect for diving thanks also to the interesting wreck sleeping on the bottom to be explored. Reaching it is a bit challenging, first of all you have to reach the village of Kardiani independently (there are no public buses). From here follow for Ormos Kardiani Giannakis and take a dirt road for a couple of kilometers where at the end you will be forced to leave your vehicle and continue on foot for less than ten minutes before arriving at your destination.
Agios Sostis Beach
Agios Sostis beach is located southeast of the Tinos island, five kilometers from the capital. One of the most coveted coasts during the holiday, with its village that from a simple fishing village has today been transformed into a perfect seaside resort with all the main comforts for a stay based on the beautiful sea and tranquility. Its long coastline is made of soft light sand bathed by transparent and clean waters, a sea that goes from blue to turquoise with shallow water, therefore perfect for families with children. Don't miss a nice walk on the water's edge or set off to discover the abyss with a mask, snorkel and fins and still perform in an acrobatic dive from the small pier. For almost all of its length it is equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas while for the more spartans, a part of the beach is free and therefore in search of their own personal corner for a wonderful day at the beach. To eat or drink there are two taverns where you can taste Greek and local cuisine, while if you want something quicker and lighter, the village, two hundred meters away, offers bars, cafes, bakeries, mini markets and restaurants. Despite its urban development, the whole area is surrounded by a fantastic landscape with high mountains that shelter it well from the winds and that offer enchanting woods where you can take a walk to discover the area up to panoramas that leave you speechless. From the Agios Sostis beach you can clearly see the sacred Delos island, Mykonos and the Rinia islands. It can be reached by following the road signs if you have a rental vehicle or by bus.
Ormos Yannaki Beach
Ormos Yannakis beach also known simply as Yannis, is located on the west half of the Tinos island. Just below the Kardiani village which we advise you to visit as it is wonderful and particular where the panorama of the Aegean is unique, is a small beach made up of sand and pebbles, crystal clear waters and a bright blue sea with a sandy bottom that slopes gently. It is dotted with a few tamarisk trees to grab for a moment's break from the heat and maybe even treat yourself to a nap. It is equipped but not very much so it is always the first come first serve argument, while as far as catering is concerned, behind it you will find some taverns where you can always find fresh fish. An ideal place for a lazy day at the beach. Getting there is child's play, it's always better to be independent but in case you decide not to drive for your holiday in Tinos, there are daily trips that go as far as Kardiani. Always check the timetables to be able to better organize yourself.
Isternia Beach
Isteria beach, we find it in the beautiful Ormos Bay in the northwest of the island. In reality there are two beaches divided by a large rock. One part of the beach is completely made of soft gold colored sand while the other is made up of small stones so if you have delicate feet don't forget your rock shoes. Both enjoy clean and clear waters and an intense blue sea. Its position and the hills that surround it, shelter it very well from the winds, making it perfect for a quiet day at the beach. It is not equipped, to shelter from the sun a few trees and a few perennial umbrellas therefore, remember to bring everything you need to avoid sunstroke and burns. As for catering, behind Isternia beach or Ormos Isternia as it is also called, the small village offers several typical taverns, and a cafeteria where you can meet the locals and maybe make friends. If you want this part of Tinos as your base for your vacation, you can find some accommodations. But the beauty of the Isternia beach is the sunset time, everything is colored with warm colors which, in contrast with the color of the sea and nature, create an enchanted landscape. If you love walking, you will find several paths that will lead you to discover the hinterland. Reaching Isternia beach is not complicated, having a rental vehicle, just follow the road signs, otherwise consult the routes with public transport.
Lichnaftia Beach
Lichnaftia beach is located on the east coast south of Tinos less than ten kilometers from the capital. Not far from the particular Triantos village not to be missed with its ancient charm. It is a small beach made of sand mixed with small black and white stones with some rocks sticking out here and there, bathed by a sea that goes from green to blue, crystalline and clean waters with a seabed that slopes down flat, excellent for families with children as well as being rich in marine fauna and flora to be explored. The surrounding natural context is brutally wild with centuries-old salt cedar trees and will take you to a sort of lost Eden. The cosmopolitan Mykonos island at this point is so clearly visible that it almost seems to be able to swim to it. Lichnaftia beach is very relaxing, the sound of the sea is the loudest noise you can hear. It is not equipped at all so keep in mind the fact that you will have to bring everything even to shelter from the hot Hellenic sun. It is essential to have your own transport to reach it, there are no public rides that reach this pristine paradise.
Agios Ioannis Beach
Agios Ioannis beach is also in a southeast direction. A place of absolute peace here, no entertainment or parties on the beach, just a quiet and peaceful life. In recent years we say that the area including its small village has become a very popular destination for a holiday in Tinos, but nevertheless still manages to maintain its very old Greek atmosphere. Around Agios Ioannis beach there are cliffs covered with Mediterranean scrub which, giving their best in summer, inebriate the air with wild scents and above all shelter it from the winds. Almost four kilometers of soft golden sand, a turquoise sea with shallow waters and calm and incredibly warm waters, the only drawback is the night which unfortunately brings some seaweed ashore in the event of a storm but do not stop in front of this catch of Mother Nature . It is well equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas while for catering, the village behind it offers several typical taverns where you can taste classic Greek and local cuisine. Go and visit the church that gives its name to the beach, it is located on the left side and is a valid alternative to a lazy day at the beach. To get there there are public buses or if you are autonomous just go southeast and follow the road signs.
Kolymbithra Beach
Kolymbithra beach (in Greek its meaning is monastery), is located on the north west coast near the Livadi plain. A wonderful bay that houses two beaches called respectively Mikri Ammos (Mikri in Greek means small) and Megali Ammos beach which instead means large that in reality the locals prefer to call it California. Two beaches of soft golden sand, a turquoise sea with crystalline and transparent waters with a seabed that slopes immediately and therefore not suitable for children. Mikri Ammos given its position is more sheltered from the winds and therefore perfect for a day at the beach or for those who love to swim and play beach games such as beach volleyball. Megali Ammos, on the other hand, is a favorite destination for windsurfers as it is much windier. It is equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas, a bar and a small tavern above the promontory which, in addition to delighting the palate with dishes of the classic Greek and local cuisine, gladdens the view of a wonderful panorama. Just after the beaches of Mikri and Megalo, with a nice walk you can come across two other delightful coves that can all be yours if you conquer them in time. From the mountain behind comes water in such quantity as to form a lake where ducklings, ducks and turtles love to stay. Opposite the bay is the Dragonisi island, the island that has the shape of a dragon. Getting to Kolymbithra beach is very easy, the important thing is to have a rental vehicle because there are no public rides.
Pachia Ammos Beach
Pachia Ammos beach, we find it in the south-eastern part of Tinos about ten kilometers from the capital Tinos Town. Not far from Lichnaftia beach, we can say that it is undoubtedly a beach with an exotic feel thanks to its wonderful dunes of fine gold-colored sand with a greenish hue. Secluded and still little known as a result not overrun by mass tourism, Pachia Ammos beach is perfect for a day in peace and silence. An uncontaminated corner where nature follows its natural course undisturbed. Obviously it is not equipped so remember to bring everything you need if you decide to dedicate an entire day to it or if you want to take a walk right above on the small promontory there is a bar restaurant where you will find drinks and food. A sandy shore bathed by a turquoise sea with crystalline and clear waters with a shallow seabed where the little ones can have fun and play in safety. To reach it you must be independent and have a vehicle, once you arrive you will leave your car or scooter in the parking lot just above and with a short walk you will arrive in paradise.
Agia Thalassa Beach
Agia Thalassa beach is located in the northwest of the Tinos island not far from Panormos beach. Isolated, little known and therefore little frequented, it is a piece of Tinos to be conquered but which will give you moments of absolute relaxation. Thanks to its position inside the bay, it is sheltered from the winds and offers a coast of soft fine clear sand, a sea that as soon as you see it you will be amazed (in fact in the local dialect a-ghia-talassa means sea) with backdrops that descend slowly. It goes without saying that it is not equipped at all, just a few tamarisk trees that give shade during the hottest hours and nothing more. Don't miss a visit to the Chapel of San Nicola which seems to be suspended over the sea and which is an added value to the beach. A beautiful story tells that in the fifties a poor whale stranded on the coast and that the bones were used to build the chair that is inside the church. If you like to explore, following the path leads to the beautiful and lonely Kavalourko beach but that's another story. So now you will understand why Agia Thalassa beach is so secret and little traveled by mass tourism, you have to want to reach it. First of all you need to have your own vehicle, according to the road that reaches it is a dirt road and decidedly bumpy. Better to leave the car or scooter beforehand and walk for about ten minutes.
Kavalourko Beach
Kavalourko beach is also located on the north western side of the Tinos island not far from Agia Thalassa beach. Quiet till boredom is the perfect place to escape from the hordes of tourists and enjoy nature in peace. A small coast of fine sand bathed by a clean sea in shades of blue with a seabed that however drops very quickly so if you are not skilled swimmers be very careful. From here a beautiful view of the Planitis islet and the Panormos Bay. Not equipped but brutally wild with some miraculous tamarisks where you can take a break from the hot Hellenic sunrays here is what to expect from Kavalourko beach. Nothing and nothing more so if you want to dedicate a day to it, know that you will have to bring everything with you. A lunar landscape with rocks sculpted by atmospheric events and more, here is a beautiful sculpture dedicated to the God Aeolus (Tinos is said to be the home of the God) by an Italian artist who wanted to pay homage to the son of Poseidon. Reaching it is a bit challenging in the sense that first you have to get to Agia Thalassa beach and then continue on foot, nothing impossible, also because the reward is worth the effort.
Rochari Beach
Rochari beach is in the northern part of Tinos near the bay and Panormos beach. Very cosmopolitan and loved by tourists, it has a small coastline of fine clear sand, crystal clear waters and a sea of a thousand colors with shallow water for the first few meters from the shore. Its location doesn't protect it very well from the winds so before going there take a look at the weather report. It is equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas, and a beach bar that offers something quick to eat and excellent cocktails. Tamarisk trees surround it giving a moment of respite from the sun. There are many sports that can be practiced on Rochari beach, have fun by renting a canoe or a paddelboard to set off to explore the coast. Opposite the Planitis islet which is an added value to the view of the surrounding landscape. You get to Rochari beach by following the signs for Panormos and then just follow the signs. As always, it would be better to have your own vehicle.
Livada Beach
Livada beach is on the southeast part of Tinos in a beautiful and secluded bay. A beach of sand mixed with pebbles, a sea that goes from turquoise to sparkling blue, clean and transparent waters with a seabed that becomes deep immediately so not very easy for children and for those who are not expert swimmers. The peculiarity of Livada beach are the rocks on the sides, huge monoliths perfectly smoothed by the wind and salt which give the landscape a magical aspect. Tamarisk trees behind frame it giving shade in the hottest moments of the day. Despite being in a bay, Eolo also arrives here and enjoys creating big waves that are not exactly inviting but above all dangerous, so if you decide to pay us a visit, check the weather conditions first in order not to waste precious time. An enchanted forest of oaks, a mysterious lake and a river where friendly animals such as turtles, geese and migratory birds love to stop complete this wonderful picture of Mother Nature so much so that the area is included in the Natura 2000 Project. Livada beach is not equipped, you can sit wherever you want, while as regards catering, in the summer there is a typical tavern that offers dishes of classic Greek cuisine and local delicacies. Reaching it is not difficult, only the final part is a little challenging. It is essential to have your own transport as there are no local buses that arrive up to here, follow the signs for Steni and Mesi. The paved road ends and for a while you will go along a dirt road until you reach a parking lot where you will leave your car or scooter and after a few steps you will reach the beach.
Vouri Beach
The small Vourni beach, we find it on the southwest side of Tinos less than ten kilometers from the Chora. A minimum beach of soft golden sand, a turquoise and blue sea, transparent and clean waters with a seabed that descends slowly enough to attract many families with children. Its position in the middle of the bay, sheltering it from the wind, you will hardly find annoying waves or gusts, is undoubtedly one of the places to spend a wonderful day at the beach. The green tamarisk trees that surround it together with the colors of the sea and sand create a landscape worthy of an impressionist painting. It is equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas while for a drink or something to eat there is a bar and a typical Greek tavern with traditional cuisine. An added value are undoubtedly the rooms where you can stay one night above the beach. Always upwards perched above the rocks, you can go and visit the small church of Agia Talassini with its iconic blue dome and whitewashed walls so as to be almost blinding when the sun is high. You can reach it by following the Ballos Tavern sign, then turn left and you will have arrived.
Stavros Beach
The tiny Stavros beach is located in the western part of Tinos not far from the Chora. It owes its name to the pretty little church that protects this little corner of paradise like a mother. A coast of soft golden sand, a sea that is always calm thanks to its position with colors that change from turquoise to deep blue, clean, crystalline and shallow waters perfect for a good swim or for families with children. Trees surround it giving it that sense of secret and usefulness to shelter from the sun. A few taverns in the surrounding area where you can taste dishes based on very fresh fish as well as local delicacies. The best moment is undoubtedly the sunset, Stavros beach is one of the most romantic places in Tinos, and the colors that the sky takes on mixed with the sea will be one of the best memories of your holiday in Greece. Reaching it is easy, just follow the signs and right between Konia and Chora you will arrive at Stavros beach.
Agios Markos Beach
Here is another little pearl, the Agios Markos beach. We find it near Stavros beach, a further gem especially at sunset. A pebbled coast mixed with golden sand with a blue-turquoise sea, transparent waters but let's face it a little cold but always calm thanks to its favorable position which totally shelters it from the capricious wind. It is equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas while one part is completely free and you can perhaps lie down under a providential tree for a nap. The gastronomic proposal is excellent, small typical ouzerie cafes where you can sip a glass of ouzo accompanied by fish snacks, what more could you ask for, I would add. To get there, just follow the same directions for Stavros beach and just after or before (depending on which side you're coming from) you'll have reached your destination.
Santa Maragarita Beach
Santa Margarita beach, we find it southeast of Tinos and is considered one of the wildest on the island. Its name comes from the small Catholic Church present. A long sandy coast with the presence of stones and rocks that emerge from under the sand, an emerald sea with very transparent waters where it is also possible to easily see the rock slabs of the seabed that descend after a few meters from the shore. A quiet, never crowded beach where you can spend a wonderful day at the beach. It is not equipped at all and Mother Nature was also quite stingy in giving away some trees, in fact there are very few so if you don't want to plant your umbrella, it is better to arrive early to grab them. Its position preserves it enough from the winds (however, consult the weather report because if it blows from the north it takes it in full force) and waves hardly form thanks to the rocks in the sea. There is not even a trace of refreshments so remember to bring everything you need. From here you can see the beautiful Mykonos island. To reach it you have to go in the direction of Steni or Potamia villages up to a narrow and steep dirt road in the last stretch so be very careful.
Apignania Beach
We find Apigania beach on the south west coast of the Tinos island, more or less ten kilometers from the Chora. A rare diamond still completely intact with a rugged, wild and unique nature so as to be considered one of the most beautiful beaches of Tinos. The reason is obviously that to reach it you will have to arm yourself with patience, strength and a spirit of adaptation since you have to travel over ten kilometers of dirt road. As always, human beings find a convenient solution and it consists in getting there by sea but for sure you would lose all the thrill of the journey. A coast of soft and fine light sand, an emerald-colored sea that turns into sparkling blue, clean and transparent waters, a seabed that slowly descends to an exotic-scented corner where you can enjoy a wonderful and unforgettable day at the beach. It is much loved by naturists as few have the desire to get there. You will have usually understood that only Mother Nature reigns here, the rest therefore there are no sunbeds, umbrellas or bars for something to drink or eat, you will have to bring everything yourself, even for the shade because there are zero trees. You can get there if you want, you have to reach the Agios Romanos Bay, leave your vehicle and get off the path. You will also pass by another deserted pearl, the Kantani beach, the choice is yours!
