Getting around on Tinos
Tinos is not large, it covers an area of 195 square kilometres, 25 long and 12 wide and therefore definitely walkable without necessarily having to waste a lot of time moving around and above all engaging in driving.
Tinos is also famous for its dovecotes, symbol of the island, real small buildings where these delicate birds nest. A tradition that dates back to the Christian period when care was taken for their symbolism linked to love and freedom. In the past, owning a dovecote was considered a social prestige. They all had a very specific structure with a ground floor that served as a tool shed, while the upper part was the doves' nest. In local slate stone it was decorated with different shapes. Those that remain on the island and that can be admired date back to the 18th and 19th centuries and are all found inland especially near the village of Tarambados.
Let's say that Tinos is not really for everyone also due to the wind. And yes, unfortunately here it often blows up and it can be annoying if you are not a fan of Aeolus.
Its inhabitants are simple people who still live on agriculture, livestock and the extraction of the famous green marble used for the construction of great works such as Buckimgham Palace, the Louvre and some monuments in Athens.
Mythology links it to Poseidon who, after the pleas of its inhabitants, freed it from the snakes that infested it, giving it the sad name of "Island of snakes".
One of the main reasons why pilgrims come to venerate the Madonna is related to sterility. When you are unable to have a child, you visit the Basilica of the Virgin Marine promising to call her unborn child with her name. According to many testimonies it works and as always the choice is yours whether to believe it or not.
But let's talk about mobility. Given its size, Tinos can be easily turned around even if there are so many things to see that its total knowledge is not exactly so immediate. As always various options for all tastes and budgets.
Car: to bring you everything and even more, as a matter of convenience and also of speed to reach one place to another. Economically it is the most expensive but on the other hand comforts come at a price...
Scooter: pros: cheap, fast, zero parking problems and a sense of total freedom. Scooters and quads are an excellent choice for getting around the island, the only thing is to choose a displacement of 100 cc more the climbs are sometimes steep and more than 50 kilometers round trip can also become heavy perhaps after a day under the sun or around the villages.
Public transport: quite good, not excellent anyway. There are rides but only a few times a day and especially not to all places. Below the site with timetables and destinations (it's only in Greek) you see what to do in the end is your vacation.
