2 minutes to read

Called "The Queen of the Cyclades" Ermoupolis is not only the capital of the island but also the archipelago capital administrative.

It is located in the eastern part of the island and is framed by two high hills facing each other which in past times were divided into neighborhoods, the Catholic and the Orthodox. An uphill city with narrow streets and many stairs connected together.

Ermoupolis, owes its name to Hermes the God of Commerce. Founded by refugees from all over Greece who brought together their abilities to create economic prosperity, they made it an important point of commercial and cultural navigation even more important than Piraeus. A lively city with unique architectural beauty where old houses, imposing churches, cobbled streets and neoclassical buildings still perfectly preserved alternate, making Ermoupolis a special and interesting place to visit.

Many European architects contributed to the magnificence of the city, such as the Bavarian Ziller who designed the Town Hall building which in addition to housing the municipality, annexed the Archeological Museum and the Ermoupolis Cultural Center with high painted ceilings where various activities are organized during the year such as exhibitions and concerts.

Miaouli Square surrounding the Town Hall is considered one of the most beautiful squares in Greece with beautiful raised panels representing the God Apollo and the Nine Muses.

Wandering among these mazes, shops, typical restaurants, bars and cafes where you can stop and admire the beauty of this small but important pearl of the Aegean.
